This is not a thread advocating piracy by any means, so hopefully it'll be allowed. Hopefully it's allowed to at least acknowledge however that piracy is no longer a crime that counterfitters used to get up to in the 90s, but something more or less all of us do on some level to varying degrees. Some listen to songs on YouTube which are copyrighted and shouldn't be on there. Some of us have thousands of songs on our computers and haven't paid a cent for them.

Very often record companies get blamed for being stuck in the past, and i think that's partly true. Universal in particular is a dinosaur of a company which seems to want to sue the industry back to the way it used to be.

But anyway, before i get into an essay on the state of 21st century entertainment, i ask you; what would a company have to do to get you to acquire their products legally? :o Lower the price? Offer it in a different format?

I don't see why. You can discuss what record companies need to do to get up to date with the modern consumer without outing yourself as a pirate.

Usually if its an artist I really like and I am a fan of then I will buy his CD but if its someone I don't know very well or only like a couple of their songs then I will download. Pretty much if your an artist that I really like I will buy your CD.

I already buy music [from iTunes]. Movies would have to come with a lot of extra features in order for me to buy them.

It costs 10-15 per person to see a movie in theatres, and then another 10 bucks just to buy a stupid popcorn and soda. I will never go back to the theatres again until they charge reasonable prices. I'd buy more dvds if they were priced around 10 though. As for music, I don't really listen to a whole lot of music so I don't really have an opinion there.

Nothing, really. It would be nice if they lowered their prices, but I still buy CD's whenever I have the money because of the unrivaled sound quality (compared to most downloads out there).

I wouldn't say I'm an audiophile (yet :P), but recently I've become very picky about the quality of my sources, which has pretty much turned me away from downloads because the file quality tends to be really poor (by the way, **** iTunes Store; abyssmal quality + DRM = FAIL). So since the only reliable way of getting lossless rips of all the albums I want is getting physical copies, I have no problem paying for albums; the price for old releases is completely worth it, imo.

They need to drop prices, I live in Australia and for some reason we usually get screwed over with pricing. Here it is about $100AU a game, $30 for a DVD movie, $40 for a Blu-Ray and $30 for a CD. If they dropped price then I would buy a lot more of these things but as it is I have to look high and low for bargains.

I already pay for my music and movies. With things like iTunes/Amazon where a song costs only 99 cents and an entire album is $10 there is no excuse to pirate music anymore.

Let me start off by saying a quote by Anatole France,"If a million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing". Just because piracy is "something more or less all of us do" doesn't make it right. I by the way do not pirate because I despise thieves. I can understand it in some situations, but a lot of people pirate when they have the wealth to otherwise legally purchase the products. If you don't want to pay for these items, you cannot have them, so do not pirate them. If you have something "more important" to pay for, that doesn't just give you the automatic right to do whatever the *&$@ you want. That doesn't give you a "free media" card allowing you to download any and all forms of entertainment at no cost to yourself. Just because you have "more important things to pay for", doesn't mean you can steal a car, gas, clothes, food, other people's belongings, etc. I have very strong feelings on the matter and pirates (and all thieves) honestly make me sick.

Lower prices. One buck a song is a ripoff. Albums are better deals, but most of them are still pretty expensive considering the number of songs offered and the fact that many I don't particularly want all the songs.

I already buy a lot of music and movies legally.

Just sometimes they could be cheaper. Import prices are high for music, and I'm not going to pay for a band's music when I haven't heard anything by or about them at all, and I follow a lot of websites and magazines so if I haven't heard of them it's pretty rare. Even then sometimes I won't buy just due to the import price...

I obtain it legally already. A company shouldn't have to do a damn thing to get people to stop stealing their property. It's the people that should realize that, if they don't like the price or the format it's in, too bad, if you want it, it should be at the price and format the owner see's fit, not at what the people see fit.

So basically, you're perfectly ok with companies giving their customers the finger... Did it ever occur to you that is why many customers give companies the finger and pirate in the first place? It's a vicious circle. Companies should ALWAYS care about what their customers have to say; listening to consumers keeps them happy, which leads them to buy more of your products. Screwing your customers over will just cause them to not give a damn.

I already paid my $10 to take a chance on a movie that might (and probably will) suck, and if they movie was good enough to buy, $20 for the DvD and $30 for the Blu-ray is too high and I generally wait til they're $5 or something off of Amazon. As for music, I'm very picky with music, so you won't see me buying an album just cuz I like one song, currently Youtube is doing a good job providing me with full songs uploaded from others.
