Recently, due to the execution of saddam hussain, i have been wondering if the death penalty and capital punishment is right or wrong. I have read many different answers by deep thinkers, all with different views. In the past, some innoccent people have been put to death but also many mass murderers and evil-doers. It is a very controversial matter and i would like the gather opinions from everyday people. Thankyou.

I think it's wrong, no matter the circumstances. We live in a society of laws, not justice. Do you think that the execution of Saddam Hussein is going to bring back 400,000 Kurds? Sure, there are a lot of deranged people who deserve not to live. But who are we to judge whether a person dies or not? Where will all the reasons for justifiable execution end? Is lawful execution just another name for justified murder? These are questions to ask one self but I would worry about a government that decided who lives and who dies. No matter how despicable the crime.

I think its wrong. If you have someone who is dangerous enough to justify killing them then lock them up for the rest of their lives or use them as forced labour.

Life imprisonment.  Work program (and not an easy job) in prison for life.

I'm mostly against it.  In some rare cases there are people that have nothing left but suffering, and I think those people should be put to death.  Take serial killers for instance, really once they've been caught alot of them aren't really much trouble in the prison system, and there's really no reason to "put them down", and honestly alot of people don't get the death penelty for killing somebody unless they pretty much want it.

In the case of Saddam I think the death penelty was sort of needed since much of the population was worried he'd end up back in power somehow (or at least that's what I heard).

One of the biggest problems with the death penalty and the prison system in general is too many people see it as a punishment system, and not a rehabilitation system, and that causes a major portion of our crime today.

Excellent point.  Japan is one country that tries to rehabilitate rather than punish.

I don't see why people have a problem with the death penalty. ESPECIALLY in cases like Suddam, he had thousands of innocent people killed, he more than deserved to die. If it were up to me there'd be a lot more scumbags being shot, no lethal injection bull crap, the murderer of any innocent person doesn't deserve to live anymore.

Of course, there are always forced labor camps....

The death penalty is not punishment, it is retribution. Punishment implies that you make one suffer. In this case, you are simply ending one.

Of course. But letting them wallow in their own guilt for many decades is much more of a punishment than death. Death frees them from suffering. They brought suffering unto another, they should suffer equally in return.

Yes, I agree. And if you can't help something, destroy it. What's so annoying to me about this is that it implies that you do WANT to help them, but, oh darn, you couldn't, so let's kill them.
