I kind of have the topic of weeaboos and "Japanophiles" and what not on my mind since I've seemed to run into so many of them throughout the course of my life. Has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) with them?

I hang out with a group of friends at school for lunch (this will now change, since I have a different lunch period than all of them starting on Monday. That's when second semester begins.) and I thought I'd take the opportunity to vent my "frustrations". It's not so much a feeling of frustration as it is wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

Anyway, there are two girls in our little group that are Korean (East Asian) wannabes to the very extreme. They are Indian, but act and talk as if they are Korean and don't even acknowledge their own heritage or anyone else's for that matter. They constantly gush over the latest K-pop bands and how hot the members are, they only play Japanese/Korean games, they are crazy into anime and manga, they write and say minor phrases in Korean to try and show how "well-rounded" they are with the culture, and so on and so forth. They pretty much fit the exact stereotype, only it's Korea instead of Japan...well sometmes, Japan.

One of the girls in particular...if you are not heavily obsessed with Korean/Japanese entertainment and culture like she is, she will tune you out completely. She won't even look at you, she won't even talk to you. If you say hello to her, she will ignore you completely.

I just think it's stupid how people can allow themselves to be so consumed by something, anything in general. What is it about these people's lives that they have to live with such a huge obsession and such huge obscurities from their daily lives? I can understand liking something, but to the point of flat out ignoring people if they aren't into the same things as you...what do you think?

Well, it's one thing to enjoy another culture's entertainment, but it's a whole different matter altogether when you're actively obsessing over it to the point where you don't even acknowledge your own country and it becomes the only topic of discussion you have to offer. That includes shunning out anybody else that isn't into the same thing and having this delusion in your mind that "this country is better than my country for these reasons".

Yup. Gangsta wannabes are a lot worse than weaboos. Some students at the campus try that stuff on me. I usually reply, "I'm not your bro dumbass". Then there's the cosplay nutcases. Geeeez.

Oh well. To each his own.

If you go to Japan, there are kids who try to emulate American pop culture as well. I guess it's a two-way street.

Never really met any in real life. Though I have encountered a lot of people who like to pretend that they are Korean online, though they don't really show their obsession in real life, so I guess they don't count.

Hallenbeck77

It's a derogatory term used to describe someone from the west who is obsessed with Asian (particularly Japanese) culture. A lot of times they'll imitate what they think the Japanese culture is like even though many weeaboos have never even been there.

That's not to say anyone who watches anime or listens to korean pop music is a weeaboo..just the ones who take their fandom over the top.

At my age, I don't run into any. I could possibly see it if any of them had spent time overseas and in Japan, but even after living in Japan for 5 years, I am not obssessed with the culture.

The scary thing is, Japanese culture is slightly warped in my opinion. Especially their views on women.

Yes, actually I would. I was chubby, lonely, and a loser. I needed someone to knock some sense into me. Luckily I did it first.

The fact that they obsess so hard over all things Japan or Korean or whatever yet would be frowned upon in said country is ironic.

They must be destroyed.

Though I am a huge anime/manga fan, I don't really talk about it, and never mention it unless asked specifically about it.

I think it's kinda stupid to be honest, they likely know absolutely nothing about the culture beyond things like anime/ manga and the other media aspects of Japan that draw them towards it. I can totally dig having respect for a culture but you shouldn't act like you've got anything to do with it.

Meh...they're kids and they are fixated and excited about something...so what's new? I really see little difference between the kinds of actions the TC describes in weeaboos and people who get really wrapped up in sports with their excessive team paraphernalia, obsessive emotional involvement, constant stat quoting, fantasy team leagues, etc. Although congrats at least to the TC for getting the idea correct. Typically on the internet the weeaboo label is usually just hurled at anybody more knowledgeable about various aspects of Asian culture than those pretending to be highly knowledgeable about the same subject.

Annoying as hell. I met my first weeaboo in real life this year when my friend suddenly became one after watching the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. Now she often pisses me off.

I don't mind if someone likes Japanese culture, it's when they shout "baka" and other words and phrases that gets on my nerves.

They were annoying in high school. Thankfully didn't bump into any during my time in college.
