That was hardly surprising. .50 Cal rounds are the size of dry-erase markers.

A katana is primarily a weapon for cutting, not a shield.

.... A soft pistol bullet does not equate to a full metal jacket 50 caliber machine gun going atat like 1500 to 2500 meters per second..

I'm not sure what this is trying to prove. Even if one slices a bullet, wouldn't the fragments still have sufficient force to kill the sword wielder?

i dont think its trying to prove anything, just a fun experiment that people can try and predict the outcome. Although everyone here did not make predictions they just watched it and commented on how dumb i am for thinking the sword would prevail.

Seems like that would happen when you are shooting the sharp, thin end of the sword. If they put the sword sideways I'm sure the bullets would have mowed it down much quicker.

That was awkwardly symbolic of Japan's transition from feudalism to industrialism.

Exactly. A big .50 calibre (lead) bullet hitting the very thin, sharp (metal) edge of a sword? Of course the bullet is going to shatter. I don't see what was so amazing.

Hahah this is a hilarious clip. They just love to make it dramatic. I love how they show the slow-mo sword cutting several of the bullets together with some grand jrpg boss battle music (it's actually a good song) and then finish the video of with some sad melody. If you'd just listen to the video it sounds more than the last ten minutes of some rpg game rather than an experiment. The lovely dramatic music for these dull and trivial scenes just makes me laugh out loud.

.50 BMG rounds vs. Katana....yup, didn't need to even finish that to know what would happen. The Germans and Japanese learned to fear the Mah Deuce because their armored halftracks and even light tanks would be turned into swiss cheese by the round, and those had around 1-2" of armor.

The result: Both the katana and the .50 cal won. The katana split a few bullets before meeting its demise due to being overwhelmed. It would be like a single, master samurai taking on 100 men at once. He would get some, but would fall to being outnumbered. . . I like how at the end they had the sad, dramatic war music playing in the background as they showed the sword winning and then breaking in slo-mo. It reminded me of the music and scene in Platoon when Willem Dafoe was getting shot by a million rounds but still had enough to reach up towards the helicopter before dying.

9mm pistol bullets are airsoft pellets compared to the rounds fired by a machine gun like that.

Yeah and?

The bullets were shattering from the impact more than anything, and every bullet that struck it took out a pretty big chunk. Its not because of the sharpness its because it's hitting the blade and glancing off because it wasn't a dead center shot.

Thats a cheaply made, probably "rat-tail" tang stainless steel garbage katana. The one against the machine gun was a masterfully crafted authentic weapon. No comparison.

Edited to add: And the guy handling it was an idiot for not treating a weapon with respect.

I'm not suprised. People, anime is not a historical representation ofweapons. Japanese weapons have no special powers, M'kay.

that pic really brings it into perspective just how ****ing massive those rounds are. I think the sword did quite well considering.
