Yeah, but only because it's a holiday from work. I cut down a tree and roasted a goose and will be getting drunk later, but that's about it. No presents.

Seriously? Are you serious? Do you know any atheistic or non-Christian people? I know people of many religions and particularly non-religious people that all give presents at Xmas. I don't believe God is anything more than a metaphor, but I still give and recieve gifts because it's tradition, it's expected.

Christmas isn't necessarily a religious holiday. I celebrate it, mostly as a family tradition.

I only celebrate it because my family does... When I move out of home I won't pay any mind to it. I think it would be hypocritical of me to celebrate a religious holiday I don't believe in.

amirbrandon
Starting? Its been that way for decades.. You make it sound like this just happened all of a sudden when it didn't.. And no its more about family than being materialistic.. Hell I am willing to bet most supposed Christians in the US celebrate it more for its commericial ideals than its actual supposed meaning.

I buy gifts for my friends and family since they celebrate Christmas, and they buy me gifts since it's their season of giving. So I guess that counts?

Hasn't this already been discussed a million times before?

Wasn't the consensus that the Christmas event/holiday isn't just limited to Christians?

Apparently so. Somebody posted real info on the fact that it wasn't a religious tradition etc, and so I therefore celebrate it, and I give gifts to the family to also let them know I am thankful for all they have done.

To me, Christmas is just a time to gather with family and exchange gifts. There's nothing religious about the way my family does it. Im happy about that, but altogether, its just a family gathering so I do celebrate it. And why celebrate Christ's birth in December when he was born in June/July... That doesnt make sense, lol.

you guys do know that the purpose of Christmas was supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Christ, right? :| ...That's probably why it's on his birth-date.

Many historians and researchers are beginning to find out that if Jesus was indeed born it was in June, not December.

The reason December is such a celebrated month has to do with both Hanukkah and several pagan holidays such as the Norse Yuletide.

Things like giving gifts, a feast and even the Christmas Tree were all originated in pagan cultures.

Well, a lot of my relatives (whom are atheist) celebrate Christmas, not because it's the birth of Jesus or whatnot, just the whole get together, exchange of gifts, family feast thing. But specifically my family? No, we don't care about it, it would be nice to get something (my friend got $500 bucks worth of stuff, I'm a tad jealous =]) but I can live and breath fine, so everything is good.

Of course... it was based on Saturnalia and people care more about a fat guy in a red suit and getting stuff. It hasn't been a religious holiday for a while now.

Easter should be more important to Christians, given it is the date of Jesus' resurrection, the basis of Christianity.

personally i'm christian and I think of christmas as a religious holiday but being christian isn't about being greedy and exclusive so even if you dont share the same beliefs as me you should still be entitled to celebrating the holiday if its in good taste. Christmas is still about giving regardless if you are athiest or not so just remember that every holiday season. I guess growing up whenever i heard someone was athiest i right from the started figured they were just lazy and didn't wan't to go to church or antyhing but no being older and more mature i've come to realize that everyone has their own views on things and i have no right to force them to believe my own.

on topic- yea if you dont think of christmas a greedy holiday than yes i think its alright to celebrate regardless of your religion.

It's a time to be good to everyone, and spread love to as many as possible.

not jesus.

christmas is about getting a 55 inch HD TV

All of mankind should be entitled to celebrate Christmas, even if you don't belive in Jesus or God or anything. It never hurt anybody to wear a smile, be happy and give gifts to people.

I am a Christian myself, but i wear the title loosley. I often question some of the things priests and R.E teachers say. Some of the crap in the bible makes me lol hard also. But generally i believe in God and Jesus.

My best friend is an Athiest and his whole extended family is also, they celebrate christmas just like everybody else. And the reason why we get along so well is we accept differences, he claims that if christians are content on making life better, helping the less fortunate and supporting communities who is anybody to stop them?
