Technically, there's still another week but as far as summer movies go, all the heavy hitters are already out. As always, The following is courtesy of Box Office Mojo.com:

PositionMovieWeekend TotalOverall Total (US Only)
1Guardians of the Galaxy$17.6 mil$251 mil
2Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles$16.8 Mil$145 mil
3If I Stay$16.3 milsame
4Let's Be Cops$11 mil$45.2 mil
5When the Game Stands Tall$9 milsame
6The Giver$6.7 mil$24 mil
7The Expendables 3$6.6 mil$27 mil
8Sin City: A Dame to Kill For$6.5 milsame
9The Hundred-Foot Journey$5.5 mil$32 mil
10Into the Storm$3.8 mil$38 mil

None of the new movies this weekend was able to take the top spot from Guardians, which has returned to #1 with $17.6 mil after settling for second for the past two weeks. This brings it's overall to $251 mil, officially making it the highest grossing film of summer 2014--a spot previously held by Transformers: Age of Extinction.

As far as the new films, If I stay opened to only $16.3 mil, and While the Game Stands Tall took in only $9 mil. The big loser overall however, is Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which went from #6 yesterday to #8 for the weekend with a pathetic $6.5 mil for its efforts--a far cry from the original's $29 mil opening weekend. Maybe the filmmakers shouldn't have waited NINE YEARS to make a follow-up.

And with that, it brings this summer's movie season to a close. I'd put next week's openings here but honestly, it's Labor Day weekend--who's gonna waste their last weekend at the theaters instead of the beach?

As always, sound off OT. What did YOU see this weekend...and was it any good?

Too much interesting stuff on VOD to warrant going to the theater lately.

That nine year wait is just ridiculous. It's not like this was some megaton franchise that would be a guaranteed hit no matter the release. I would have been pumped for Sin City 2 had it been released six years ago. Now? Meh.

I saw Sin City and it was a decent film although the wait and the movie style has kind of worn off on people, not surprising that it flopped. Glad to see Guardians still doing well. It'll officially become the highest domestic grossing film of the year on Friday, passing Captain America. It'll end with over $300 million by the end of it's run, and for a movie with no previous main character appearances, that is a fantastic result. Disney is definitely happy.

What a disappointment for Sin City, I mean I'll still go see it, but this pretty much kills any shot of more down the road.

Never been so happy to see a film do well as I am with Guardians. Movie was FANTASTIC and I feel it's doing so well will open the door for more obscure superhero movies.

I'm sorry to see Sin City do so poorly. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and would like to see a third and final film, but that looks impossible now.

@-Fromage-: I think the studio had a feeling they had a dud on their hands. If they didn't they would not have waited so late in the summer to put it out. As it is, it took them almost a decade to make it at all. Why they waited so long is beyond me.

In news relating to Sin City, I bought the first one on dvd. I don't plan to watch it though until I read the comics.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the inevitable Avengers x Guardians of the Galaxy will make a cruise ship ton of money and then some. I'm excited.

I was hoping for Hercules to be on that list. Shame to see it did so bad at the box office.

Anyway, good to see that a good film like guardians took the crown away from that TMNT and transformers shit.
