There's an error in the animation. It says that the solar system can fit in the stars shown later on.

On WikiPedia it says this:

"Roberta M. Humphreys (2006) estimates the radius of VY CMa at 1800 to 2100 solar radii. To illustrate, were our Sun replaced with VY Canis Majoris, its surface would extend to the orbit of Saturn."

Which is not the diameter of our solar system. Nevertheless, the star is gigantic.

Yes I saw a video on this a few months ago. Small little animation like that pic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfs1t-2rrOM

It's badass IMO how colossal these stars can get. Imagine all the different species of life they give off to.

If that made you feel insignificant, then don't read the rest of my post.

If you could travel at one one light year an our, it would take 208 days to get there. Traveling at 70mph it would take about 17,495,908,850,000 days to get there, if I did my math right. The average man would only live about 28,000 of those days. That's about 624,853,887.5 lifetimes. How's that for putting things into perspective?

To make us feel even more insignificant:

If you took the fastest aircraft on earth (x-43 at mach 9.8 ) and went through W Cephei from one end to the other it would take you ~35 years. Or it might be 70 years, I'm not sure if the number given in that video is the radius or diameter.

Now someone needs to come up with another one.

Nah, when a star novas it only takes several days. Not that that matters since a star as massive as the one this topic is about would implode into a black hole, not supernova.
