Most of the comments I've heard or read about The Book of Eli have said that the movie was not as good as they expected it to be or that it was merely okay. However, I actually think the opposite of this movie. I loved everything about it; the cinematography was great. I loved the "dull" earth tones used for the color. I also loved the post apocalyptic setting; most of the locations were desolate. I like desolate scenery, like in other films such as I Am Legend. I loved the main character, he was such a badass. Here you have a man all on his own who's completely dedicated to accomplishing his task and is practically unstoppable, bar the last battle he finds himself in. Even though there have been characters such as this one before, this film's use of this type of character didn't feel cliche or forced. It felt genuine. Anyhow, what did you guys think of this movie?
Did you suspect that the book he was protecting was a Bible? Also, did you ever think that he was blind? Can you think of any inconsistencies in the film regarding him being blind?
NOTE:

If you are going to answer the questions within the spoiler tags, please use spoiler tags so that you don't spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it.

I enjoyed it. I kind of figured out what book he was protecting based on the name of the movie, actually. :P The movie did teach me to stay away from old people after an apocalyptic scenario, though.

It was pretty obvious he was carrying a bible; the other twist was a little unexpected though. I thought the movie was okay.

It was below average (5/10) it had some good aspects, but it was mostly just bad in my opinion. The story, acting, action, just about everything could have been better and the end twist is too ridiculous. The visuals were the best part.
he was blind
Knowing this, there's no way he could have done half the **** he did in the movie. Especially the bird scene. It was a bit too religious but other than that I really like it.

Ithought the movie was great. The characters felt real, not forced like how you said. And I always love a post-apocalyptic movie. They pulled it off really well with the cinematography and there was just enough symbolism and foreshadowing to make it intense and interesting. They actually used things from the bible in that movie....not just the bible itself and the verses from it but also in the shaking tremors that people get when they devour human flesh. Watch out for those prions! Then the unexpected surprise at the end too, of course.

I'm actually not religious at all, yet I loved the religious undertones, or should I say overtones. Lol.
I loved the part when he's in the bar and about to fight off a large group of guys. He quotes a few lines from the Bible. Cursed be the ground for our sake. Both thorn and thistles it should bring forth, for us. For out of the ground we were taken for the dust we are, and to the dust we shall return.I thought this line was a nice touch, especially the part in bold. It was so fitting, because right after he says that, he kills all but one of them.
I can name several works that have very distinct anti-religious bents, and that never hurt any of the acclaim they got. Anyway, never saw it. Premise seems interesting, but reviews seemed very meh.

Rent it from Netflix and make sure that you get it on BluRay Disc (no pun intended). If it's not worth a view in theaters, it's definitely worth a rent at the very least. Though, I personally think that it's worth much more than a rent.

Perhaps. I've got quite a long list of other movies I'm more interested in, but I'm very interested to see a religiously-themed movie that A. Is actually good, and B. treats the subject with a modicum more respect than "Preacher."

I thought the movie was excellent. However, I find myself wondering how much more amazing it would have been if it were directed by the Wachowski Brothers.

In my opinion, I don't think the religion aspect of the film was its main idea. I think the religious aspect was really the foundation to the main idea: A Man whose determination and dedication drives him to overcome great obstacles, even in the face of death. I don't think the religious overtones of the film alienate anyone who isn't religious. I'm not religious, but I absolutely love this movie.

@bebop013:

*SPOILER*The movie didn't explicitly say that he was blind, but it did strongly imply such. The way the camera zoomed in on his eyes as he was dictating the words from the Bible to the man who was writing them down, was very suggestive. Also, his eyes seemed very lifeless, much like the eyes of a blind person when the camera zoomed in on them in that scene. Not to mention, that if you watch the film again (with the knowledge that he's blind), you'll notice that there are scenes in which he moves/ doesn't move his eyes much like a blind person would. *SPOILER*

That's about how I felt. I didn't feel like I had wasted my time after I finished watching it, but I didn't run out and buy a copy either.

I think it would have been more interesting if at the end it was revealed that all the other major religious works were also brought there through similar extenuating circumstances.

I was bored throughout the entire movie. Pretty much felt like the stock template for a post-apocalyptic action movie, without even an attempt at originality.

Also, while I have no problem with religious messages in movies (A Serious Man was one of my favorite movies of last year), the implementation in The Book of Eli was pretty half-assed.

When I was watching the movie I can't help but think thatwhy it took so long, I think 30 years, for him to reach San Francisco Alcatraz prison and deliver the Bible. Maybe I missed something about the film or it was a reference to how Noah was lost on his Ark for a long while before he found land, as God was testing his faith.

And I thought they might have over exaggerate the importance of the Bible in a post apocalypse world, it could've been any other holy test such as the Talmud or Koran, in which the film did reference at the end, when the finish test of Bible was put between those texts. But, it was just a movie so I don't dwell on it too much :P

Actually the film made many references to the Bible, so no. And it wasnt an "over exaggeration" since it was a story that they wanted to do.
