And it's not just bacon.

It's basically any processed meat: bacon, sausage, ham, deli meats, hot dogs and the pepperoni on your pizza!

After no fewer than 58 scientific studies, the existence of a link between processed meats and cancer is deemed to be "beyond a reasonable doubt".

Every 50g of processed meat that a person eats on a daily basis increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 21 percent.

Every 10g increases the risk of prostate cancer by 10 percent.

Here's the article from the Huffington Post: Could Processed Meat Give You Cancer?

Why? Why couldn't it have been ******* broccoli instead?

Honestly these studies fluctuate so often I'm going to take it with a grain of salt.

And whenever I hear about one of these, I think about this song since it's so true. You will die eventually, don't worry about the small things.

"It's basically any processed meat: bacon, sausage, ham, deli meats, hot dogs and the pepperoni on your pizza!"

I'm dead.

I'm sure it's too late for me now.

This week alone, I had for lunch:

1. Turkey/Bacon Ciabatta Sandwhich - Monday

2. Pepperoni Pizza Slices - Tuesday

3. Hoagie - Wednesday

4. Hot Dog - Yesterday

I had Ravioli for lunch today. Thank goodness.

"Increase the risk by XX%" doesn't mean anything. One still has to be susceptible to developing the cancer in the first place, plus "win" the cancer lottery. Life is too short to worry about "increasing the risk" of cancers that most will eventually get as the body gets older.

Not a surprise, really - nitrates are not good for you in any way. A lot of companies are releasing preservative free deli meats, and I'd imagine eating their bacon has no adverse effects. At least, none that aren't related to high cholesterol.

I wish people would just lie and say all food is good for you.

Like those deep-fried butter sticks in Iowa. Are they safe to eat?

My local diner where I eat a lot use sthe nitrate-free bacon.

If I can't eat ANY bacon, I may as well off-myself right now.

Pfft, I'm calling shenanigans on this. There's no way that something that tastes that good could be bad for you!

By the way, these percentage numbers are a little misleading. I'm guessing they mean you're 21% more likely to get the cancers than if you didn't eat the bacon/whatever, but what's the actual likelihood of a person getting one of the cancers to begin with? If it's not all that high, then the 21% figure may not be that much in terms of likelihood of getting cancer.

EDIT: As I was saying, according to the article, about 143,000 get colorectical cancer per year in America. That translates to less than a tenth of a percent chance of getting colorectical cancer, which means that eating this stuff increases your actual chances of getting it by about two one-hundredths of a percent. I think I'll take my chances and enjoy bacon the little that I do eat it.

I've just checked the ingredients on a now empty packet of beef jerky:

Blah, Blah, "Sodium Nitrite", Blah, Blah :(

Dammit. I've eaten that stuff every day for the past eight months.

It's been an integral part of my weight loss plan.

Yes, that's what I'm hoping too, i.e. that the increased risk, over-and-above a baseline risk of X%, is (1.21 * X) %, as opposed to (X + 21) %.

If X is small, then who gives a damn!

I'm 100% sure that this has been known for awhile. Its the reason I was prohibitted from eating bacon, non-kosher hotdogs and sausage growing up. Basically anything but the most well cooked pork is quite unhealthy. Its funny, you wonder why most religions prohibit the consumption of pork, there's your answer.
