The Young Turks: A University of Maryland student covers her tuition costs (and then some) by taking a train to New York every other weekend to work as an exotic dancer, according to a story from WMAR Baltimore. She makes about $180,000 a year. (Payscale says the typical annual income range for an exotic dancer is anywhere from $20,000 to $142,000.)

Six figures for working every other weekend? That's pretty fantastic. This might not be the job choice for everyone — including some of the roughly 20 million college students in the U.S — but Maggie (who didn't give the TV station her last name), seems more than happy with her choice. She has to have plenty of spending money, too: Tuition at the University of Maryland was $23,581 this year for state residents. It was $42,767 for out-of-state students."* Ana Kasparian, Dave Rubin (The Rubin Report) and Gina Grad (Gina Grad Show, Pretty Good Podcast) break it down on The Young Turks.

How do you feel about this? Do you think it's fair?

Male strippers, of course. I'd wager there's less opportunities/pay for male strippers then there are for female strippers.

Anyways I kinda doubt she makes that much, and if she did it's not from stripping alone.

Fair play to this girl for being enterprising. Its the men who spend their cash just to get teased by something they can have that get me confused as hell.

Not a good idea. $180,000 sounds really good (and it is), but that kind of job doesn't tend to last a hell of a long time. I'm not saying there aren't old strippers out there, but it's usually a case of making money when you're young and then getting out.

Props to her. She's getting that money and getting an education at the same time. Some will hate but she's getting super paid. I was making $7.50 an hour for 20 hours of work per week when I was in college. If she likes getting naked and dancing, who cares? She's doing her thing. She should be happy about it.

There's a sizable amount of college girls fucking and sucking for a grand total of $0 while working some dog shit job that pays nowhere close to $30K a year, let alone $180K. She's just (allegedly) dancing. Whose the real dumbass in that scenario? She should have an attitude of "cry me a river" to all complainers. She will wipe your tears with $100s that she throws in the trash can.

I don't think being a stripper has much job security. It would be wise to have a backup plan and a degree can help with that.

She should save at least half of her earnings for a few years and then start her own business. Screw earning a degree which will enable her to do nothing more than become a corporate slave.

This really is sad. It seems the more educated and talented your are the less appreciated you are.

One time I went to an amusement park. There was a game in which you had to break ten drinking glasses with a single shot. 2 dollars for each bullet and should you succeed you would win 10 dollars.. Just before my very own eyes a group of students spent more than 50 on that and never won. Talking about easy money. And I was standing there thinking how the hell that uneducated person earns more than me, a university student?

I know it's a different person and shooting, but BluRay recently commented bout how much he agrees with the kid who shot up those people in CA a few days ago. It's kind of disturbing.

Oh, calm down. I'm not going to go on a killing spree.

I'm pretty sure earning a degree will help her in opening her own business, if she decides to go that route.

Your train of thought baffles me sometimes.

One does not need to go to college to gain the knowledge necessary to start their own business. One can acquire such knowledge on their own, by reading books and acquiring information on the internet, etc. College isn't necessary for non-STEM and non-Law fields, in my opinion.

Life isn't about money but about maximization of enjoyment. Hence, unless someone enjoys their job, which is a rarity in this country (the U.S.A.), most of their time awake - by far - is spent doing something they don't like. Consider the following:

  • Standard 40 Hour work week
  • An average of 1 hour to travel to work per day (5 hours per work week)
  • An average of 1 hour to travel home from work per day (5 hours per work week)
  • An average of 8 hours of sleep per day (56 hours per week)

That's a total of 106 hours per week out of 168 total hours which leaves a mere 62 hours left for leisure time. However, that leisure time is split up into daily, small amounts of time.

I wouldn't judge her for it -- I don't believe it's wrong, but of course this is unfair.

Most people work extremely hard for years to make even half that kind of money.
