It was just confirmed that Steve Jobs has died. He will be missed. Whether or not you like Apple, he was admittedly a brilliant business man. Rest in Peace.

Steve Jobs: February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20111005-716057.html

Steve Jobs' family today made the following statement regarding his death:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/05/statement-by-apples-board-of-directors/

Steven Paul Jobs was 56. He died from advanced pancreatic cancer that he had been publicly fighting since 2004. He, along with co-founder Steve Wozniak, built one of the most "commercially successful" personal computers and founded Pixar animation studios.

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

You can share remembrances with Apple atrememberingsteve@apple.com.

Do not therefore consider this life as an object of any moment. Look back on the immense gulf of time already past; and forwards, to that infinite duration yet to come, and you will find how trifling the difference is between a life of three days and of three ages.

Let us then employ properly this moment of time allotted us by fate, and lave the world contentedly; like a ripe olive dropping from its stalk, speaking well of the soil that produced it, and of the tree that bore it.

As for cause, it's not out yet, but given his paticular issues it's probably general organ failure due to complications from metastatic cancer, liver failure, etc.

Amazing visionary. I'm not a fan of apple products, but for what they are, they're simply fantastic for users. Great man, the first to truly believe in Pixar and invest in them. Once again, a great visionary. Rip

Is that so...? Well, I still think it's common courtesy to include a link when making a news thread, especially when when you're making claims that would seem outlandish without a reputable source to back you up.

Here:

Yahoo

There's not even a full article on it yet, as far as I can tell.

It's kind of painful to slog through attempts to eulogize a guy most haven't met, but occasionally the posts here are entertaining. Foul play, arguing about links... I'm waiting for the first person who says, "I didn't like apple products, and Steve Jobs dying doesn't change my opinion about him or his legacy a bit". I'm making popcorn in anticipation.

Another victim of pancreatic cancer, along with my dad. They seriously need to research this murderous disease further and develop more treatments and eventually a cure.

Not a fan of apple products, their prices, quality or reliability... However Steve Jobs revolutionized personal computing and there is no denying that. 'Tis a sad day in the world of geeks. This happening so soon after his resignation kind of makes me think he knew it was coming. Good call not telling the public...apple stocks prolly would have taken a hit. Whereas now they'll prolly skyrocket along with their sales.

Its not foul play: Its pacreatic cancer and liver cancer with a liver transplant to boot. He fought it for about 8 years. Same thing that took Patrick Swayze. Pancreatic Cancer is a silent killer, usually doctors dont know you have it till long after its spread to other orgrans (for example, a biopsy of a liver turmor will come back as "abnormal pancreus cells" meaning the cancer started there and not in the liver.)
