Ohio Secretary of State Jon Hustedsrecent decision to prohibit early voting on nights and weekends in all districts has many concerned about the effect on voter turnout in the state, particularly among low-income and minority communities. But one Republican Party chairman is content to suppress votes among this vulnerable demographic. Doug Preisse, chairman of the Republican Party in Franklin County, which contains the city of Columbus, admitted in an email to the Columbus Dispatchthat black voters would now have a more difficult time voting:

I guess I really actually feelwe shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban read African-American voter-turnout machine. Lets be fair and reasonable.

Preisse was one of the board of elections members who blocked Democratic efforts in Franklin County toexpand voting hoursto evenings and weekends. According to the Dispatch, he called claims of unfairness "bullsh1t. Quote me!

Preisse alsoservedon Newt Gingrichs leadership team in Ohio during the primary and is a top political consultant to Ohio governor John Kasich (R).

In 2008, 82 percent of early voters in Franklin County voted on nights or weekends. The Secretary of State has defended the move to cut hours across the state by pointing to his initiative sending absentee ballots to every registered voter. But according to a study by Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates, black voters and Democrats prefer to cast their ballots in person, with 13.3 percent of black Ohioans casting early ballots in 2008 compared to just 8 percent of white voters.

Secretary of State Husted most recentlysuspendedtwo Democratic members of the Montgomery County Election Board for voting to allow weekend voting in spite of the directive to restrict hours.

I guess it's a nice change of pace that he's upfront about his racism, rather than pull some Mickey Mouse bullsh1t like the others, lol.

It's not Bart gets an Elephant? This doesn't really surprise me at any rate. The GOP have a fairly large record of attempting to change the voting process to allow for more votes to go to the Republican party.

I'm quite baffled by how this can actually happen in the so-called "land of freedom". You have Republican legislators creating laws that will disenfranchise ,at an extremely low estimate, thousands of voters to stop dozens (at most) of fraud votes from happening, with a disproportionate effect on people who would vote for Obama. Some of them have explicitly stated that they're doing this just so that Romney can win their states. How the f*ck did this massive travesty manage to happen in a country that makes a huge deal about having a high level of political freedom?

Voting is supposed to be open to all registered individuals....period. Really see less and less reason why the Republican party should continue in existence.

The GOP is sorely in need of some reform. When you've reached a political climate where even Reagan is too liberal, something is wrong.

They're scared. They see 'liberal ideas' (read: "not the way things were when we were growin up") becoming more entrenched in society and are just flipping out. The country is shifting under their feet and they're scared to death that tomorrow isn't going to look like yesterday.

"Oh noes, white people aren't going to be a majority in 20 years!":o

Some people actually find that idea frightening. For some reason. Yeah, you and I both know the reason, it's just unusual for someone to admit it.

I'm quite aware of the impending demographic apocalypse that the GOP is so terrified of. However, as idiotic, outdated, misinformed and poorly thought out as their proposed policies are, they are still politicians, and I don't understand how American politicians can think it is a viable move to blatantly attempt to disenfranchise voters for an extremely short term gain, or how the American public has let this slide without calling for the resignations of every single legislator who helped pass these bills.

Our politicians are experts at kicking the can down the road. This shouldn't be news to anyone. The Baby Boomers aren't much better and they're a vast section of the voting bloc right now, so hopefully once they're gone we can start in earnest to clean up after them.

Being a Gen X'er I feel my generation is right on the pivot: those behind us are the bigots of the 'me, me, me' generation, Gen X'ers can shift either way, and Gen Y is generally the more progressive of the current voting public.

It'll be a long while before things get better, and they're going to get worse before that. The Boomers didn't just kick the can down the road, they packed it into a cannon, shot it into the sky, then nuked it to hell.

10 cases of voter fraud nationwide in over 10 years and the republicans want to remove millions of blacks, latinos and the elderly from the voting roles.

wtf is wrong with you people?

"A new nationwide analysis of more than 2,000 cases of alleged election fraud over the past dozen years shows that in-person voter impersonation on Election Day, which has prompted 37 state legislatures to enact or consider tougher voter ID laws, was virtually nonexistent.

The analysis of 2,068 reported fraud cases by News21, a Carnegie-Knight investigative reporting project, found 10 cases of alleged in-person voter impersonation since 2000."

It's really quite shameful that Republicans have to resort to these tactics in order to even have a chance of winning. Why couldn't they have just picked Paul Ryan to lead the charge and not worry about the redneck vote?

How can states get away with this? Because there are many state supremem courts that are equally partisan and are willing to stack the deck if it means retaining their majority.

Recently a state legislator was on camera saying that the PA voter ID law was meant to get the election for Romney. It's that blatant and no one is really rising up to stop it.

I think the majority of people reading this are missing the point of what he was trying to do. He wasn't being racist or trying to prevent black voters from voting. He was saying that no special accomodations should be made to cater to them. That's completely correct.

These aren't 'special accommodations' as they are ones that have been present in the past. For example... In 2008, 82 percent of early voters in Franklin County voted on nights or weekends.

They are doing similar awful things in places like Pennsylvania in which the voter fraud act is being pushed forward (even though they haven't come across a single event where voter fraud occurred), just as a tactic to prevent voters from voting.. Its absolutely fvcking disgraceful..

This is truly disturbing. Don't Americans feel like doing anything about this? I mean, this is what goes on in Russia. Russian elections are not problematic because of ballot stuffing and voter fraud. They are problematic because the state uses it resources (eg. media) to shift the vote in its favour. This is what is going on here. The state using its resources to achieve victory for the ruling part. How awful.
