So I got a package in the mail today from Nielsen, the TV ratings people. Seems they want to know what I watch on TV and gave me two nice crisp $1 bills (seriously, you wouldn't believe how crisp these bills are) as an incentive to fill their shit out and get signed up.

I'm kinda on the fence about whether to reply or not. On one hand, I don't watch a lot of TV because TV today sucks. Disagree with me all you want, but Nielsen didn't ask you, now did they? On the other, this may be one of those "shut up and do something about it" moments.

I don't even have cable because there was never anything on, so I've switched to broadcast TV (SNL, Nova and Nature is about all I watch) Netflix and Vudu. I wonder how Nielsen will respond when they realize how little TV I really watch.

Would you let someone track your TV viewing habits? Would the fact that your habits are being monitored change the way you watch TV?

Have you ever seen dollar bills so damned crisp?

I watched - twice - a TV quiz back called eggheads a couple of months back, which is about the extent of it for the last 4-5 months or so. Sure they can monitor my habit/lack of for a couple of notes, especially if they're crisp as they have excellent properties to be used outside of basic currency exchange when rolled up - perfect for that paper mache oil rig you've had sitting around the house for ages and you were searching for something to place as legs just to close it off.

His face looks puffy (old Sly) I'm wondering if that's from cosmetic surgery?

But sure some men don't age well, but most men age better than most women.

I wonder why the compensation is so low. I mean tv is a billion dollar industry, you would think they would really incentives people to give them as much information about their viewing habits as possible so that they can really transform their shows into something everyone wants to watch.

That being said if you want to see better television in the future tc I suggest you do their survey. If you don't care to see good tv and enjoy occupying your time with other things then I say screw it.

I don't even understand the purpose of Nielson anymore when modern technology means that broadcasters can electronically tell how many people watch their shows now. Plus, with so many people cutting the cord Hulu and web views are being considered for ratings now.

Now that I think about it, I got one of those Nielson envelopes a few weeks ago, I might open it up for those crisp ones. Too bad for them that I don't have cable anymore and I can only get two channels over the air here because reception sucks so bad here.

Nielsen is important because the technology does not tell them the age range of their viewer base. The age range is the most important statistic because it's plays the most into which ads should be displayed and how much those ads cost. Certain age ranges spend more money on products they see on TV then others. Plus technology can't differentiate between if it's being viewed live, it's being DVR'd or it's just tuned to that station but the television is off. Neilson is directly responsible for how much a company has to pay in order to display an ad during a program. They have yet to find a better way to build statistics about the show viewer base.

At 38 I still know some of the girls I went to high school with, and the sun-bathers definitely have 20 years over the milky white non-tanning girls as far as appearances go.

I've always preferred fair skin on my women anyway.

I did it once, they thought we were awful and told us to do a better job, so they gave us coupons to a pizzeria.
