misterbossman

Dubstep is too dark to ever move into the mainstream. It'll be embraced by a certain demographic sure, which will vary in size as did/does DnB. I don't mind some of it, but I thought tech house was making more a resurgence in the UK anyway (which gets the girls moving more than dubstep at least anyway). Besides dubstep's just a continuation on the same timeline as the speed garage that got a brief spolight out fo Croydon back in the latter 90s. They've just given it a new name.

In terms of future predictions? Impossile to say. The music industry is changing rapidly - record companies move towards more commercially viable avenues that alienates certain individuals who are more likely to download illegally - they'll ramp up making music for the very young, still reliant upon parents to provide and more likely to procure by legal means, or the Susan Boyle-esque kind of music that appeals to the generation who haven't got a clue how to download illegally/more likely to purchase legally from a moral perspective.

Similarly if the likes of Spotify - paying artists next to nothing - becomes the norm for free music streaming, we'll see a massive shift in the demographics the mainstream targets for sure. Hell I'm not sure what we'll see - musicians looking for alternative avenues and revenue streams to support the fact that releasing music will no longer be a viable means to support yourself.

Aside from that......... who knows? Maybe we'll get a little more retrospective and a lo-fi/garge orientated ounterculture will rise up and take the place of uber-producers right now. Who knows indeed... Haven' ta clue...

Maybe. I can see it becoming the dominant genre of electronic dance music. I don't know about it becoming the dominant genre of popular music in general though.

I hate dubstep , original dubstep is just reggae without lyrics and modern dubstep ( modern , i mean the latest dubstep )...well it sounds like any other ordinary music , nothing special . I like japanese , reggae , classic rock , classic music , chinese music , and video game music (lol) .

I hope we will have something nice and not repeated 999 times ...imo .

Slutwave... Kesha, Lady Ga Ga, Katy Perry... these acts are huge right now, and they are very easy to discover... no talent needed, just dress like a whore and use autotune behind some lame beats... this music makes money like it prints it...

Who knows what the new era of music will bring. Hopefully it is good. I miss the 1930's and 40's in terms of music.

admittedly I was using exxaggeration. But they are pretty much opposites, garage is mostly percussion. dub is base wobbles and drums.

Terrible dubstep examples in this thread... its gotten a little more progressive than that in the past few years.

A few examples...

James Blake

Blawan

Mount Kimbie

Burial

And there was also that summer fad of last year... witch house, also known as drag step. Enjoyable all the same...

Salem

oOoOO

Balam Acab

White Ring

I can't imagine dubstep getting big outside a certain demographic. It just doesn't seem like something that has the potential to become mainstream, and if by chance it does, its time to shine will be brief.

Dubstep is like the matrix, first time you see it its just a scramble of nensensical madness, but with experience. You can see, feel and understand it.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but a lot of that is from artists who don't really have their own style. Stuff like NiT GriT is totally different to other dubstep. There are though, a lot of copycats in the genre, so your point is certainly an understandable one.

I really hate how mainstream Dubstep is getting, its not going to be the "next era" at all. Its just annoying that the genre has exploded and now you have a bunch of people who hardly know what it is criticize it. Typical mainstream audience....

And there is no "new era" The era of music is dead, a person form gen Y and now Z have no grasp of what a music revolution/era can do or has done. The Music industry is in a very weird place right now, tons of artists are in that same place as well, and aside from all of that, everything is moving incredible fast. I think this decade will bring a lot of positivity back into music, especially the mainstream. 2010 was a huge indication of that since it was a great decade for mainstream music, so their is great optimism in the decade ahead

...I hope not. I can't get into it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb5rhCq9msQ My buddy is a rapper and feels the same way you feel, so he's decided to blend rap and dubstep in hopes of catching the wave before it hits, I guess. The whole thing is lame to me, though.

They're both electronic, but thats where the similarities end

Wobblyspeed garage from the late 90s. I used to play some of this stuff out back in the day :P

It was pretty s**t really looking back. I'm just pointing out how the Croydon sound in the late 90s shares common ground with dubstep today - It's a sound that's been around for many years in different guises. It's just got a different name these days.
