We know that most motor oil that is good is very expenisve such as the 5w-30 which is 8 dollars US for a quart....but what type of oil do mechanics use for their customers when we come in for an oil change. What type of oil do they give you for oil changes?

If you don't bring in oil they will use whichever standard or synthetic oil they have a contract with. I personally only use mobil 1 full synthetic in my truck.

5w30. You don't need 20.

do you know the difference between 5W20 and 5W30?

I use 5W-30.

That is what the cap says to use, so it's what I use. I just buy it when it's close to needing to be changed and on sale.

Got for 5-30 or 5-540, if your car has a lot of mileage then go for 5-50.

If you have 100k miles on your car I'd go for 5-50, the number is a number for viscosity, which helps worn engines to have better compression

They will use the cheap oil for your car.(say your car takes 5w-20) then they will use the cheap 5w-20 unless you request the more expensive oil or bring in your own. We do it all the time at the garage I work at.

The weight of the motor oil depends on your weather... It also depends on your car, cause some manufactures prefer you put certain oils in your car. Also depends on the past types of oil that's been in your car before, cause some brands dont mix well with others, for example Penzoil doesn't like other brands of oil, so if you used a different type in the past, then stay away from Penzoil. I usually use 10w-30 Quakerstate oil. And yes, I change my own oil too. I've actually gonna change mine this friday after I get paid.

The oil cap on your engine should say what kind you need. I use 5W-20 Quaker State in my car.
