i think its a toss up between mike tyson and muhammad ali. there have been better boxers then tyson and ali, but none of them with the fame of either man. both are universally known names and everyone will know who you're talking about, even if they're not boxing fans.

I'd have to agree. But then again, it's kind of unfair because boxing is a one-man sport whereas other sports consist of teams so individuals don't get quite as much recognition. Other than those two, I'd say Wayne Gretzky or Shaq.

i have no idea who roy keane is. tyson probably doesn't know who he is either. but keane probably knows who tyson is. ;)

also CC ftw. though past his prime, he is a true legend in the sport.

Jordan. He's one of the few sports icons recognized almost everywhere by every generation. Basically if you've heard of Basketball you know Jordan.

I don't know what the international opinion is, but in the US its hard to tell. Jordon, Tiger, Ruth, Ali, Favre and Gretzky are all up there.

Probably Pele or Muhammed Ali. My favorite is probaly Ali, he was such a badass. "This might shock and amaze ya, but I will destroy Joe Frazier", god the man was awesome.

3) Babe Ruth

2) Ali

You don't have to be from Quebec to appreciate the Rocket....instead of Gretzky I would also say Guy Lafleur. I hate Gretzky.

Michael Jordan (basketball). Babe Ruth (baseball). Pele (soccer). Toger Woods (golf). Michael Johnson or Usain Bolt (track). Lance Armstrong (cycling). Muhuammed Ali (boxing). Wayne Gretzky (hockey). Roger Federer (tennis). Anyone got anything for football (I don't think we should even count it because it's only popular in the US)? Am I forgetting any other sport (I tried to narrow it down to 1 per sport)?

Ali, hands down. No one had the world wide popularity he did/does. Hell if he visits a town now, it shuts down (IE: his recent visit to Ricky Hatton). Not sure that we'll ever have another sports icon like Ali. So many sports, 24/7 media and fast news cycles, Ali was built up for years, and when it came time to answer the call (Standing up for what he believed in) he did what so very few of us would. And that's why he's still so beloved and respected today.

Steve Yzerman over Gretzky or Lemieux? I'm a Wings fan but I could not put him over those two in terms of global popularity.

Pele, and Michael Jordan probably. Most of the world knows Pele and other football greats, nobody outside of North America knows about Babe Ruth or Gretzky or whatever baseball/american football/hockey stars you can think of, aside from maybe Michael Jordan who can be found on T-shirts, pants and shoes all over the world.

No one made more money in sport than michael schumacher.

Ofcourse tiger woods made more but in golf you dont have to retire with an aging body so it's unfair to include golf and to some extent baseball as well.

Depends. Obviouly most people from here are American, and will probably use some obscure America star from some equally obscure sport.

However, i believe you Americans have a winner in Ali, however there are several others with world wide renown. David Beckham (Sadly) Pele (Thankfully) Mike Tyson, Tiger Woods. Zinadine Zidane etc.

Supposedly the cumulative television audience of all matches of the 2006 World Cup is estimated to be 26.29 billion. Soccer stars get a bit more exposure, I think.

Its hard to say. A lot of people are posting people like Michael Jordan, but he's only really famous in the US. China's most famous sportsperson is Yao Ming, and with China containing nearly 20% of the worlds population, he's gotta be up there, but hasnt been mentioned once.

David Beckham is definitely incredibly famous in Europe, but is also famous in Asia, and well-known in any football (soccer) playing nation, which is pretty much everywhere.
