Most effective melee weapon?

What kind of combat are you looking at? If you are talking about going up against a person in full 15-16th century European plate armor, you want some thing long, with a heavy head on it to get lots of force to punch through that armor, like a poleaxe of some kind. If you're operating in a close formation with a nice shield wall, a really long spear is good to have. Variety is the spice of life, and in weapons it allows one to compensate for the weaknesses of any one particular weapon. I've personally always had warm place in my heart for swords from Europe's dark ages, and the old Celtic Falcata or Nepalese Khukuri.bobwill1Nerd. :D
