Some of the bands I listen to plus their genres. Atreyu - Metalcore The Berzerker - Grindcore Children of Bodom - A mix between new and older metal Cradle of Filth - Metal with a bit of classical elements Drowning Pool - Nu-Metal Lamb of God - Metalcore Rammstein - Dancemetal Rhapsody of Fire - Neoclassical Metal Static X - Nu Metal/Industrial Thine Eyes Bleed - Metalcore All of those bands all have a completely different sound from each other.

Aside from the standards (Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, etc), I like Lamb of God, Cradle of Filth, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, Megadeth, and Motorhead.  There are also some really new ones I really like too, like Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, which are kind of southern rock meets screamo.  Anoter is Kill Cheerleader, who released their first album last year, they're kind of a mix of punk and pop metal.  Then there's a really new one called Symbol of Blasphemy, they're labelled as death metal on multiple sources, but it sounds more like a mix of sludge and black metal, with insane vocals.

If anything, anyone that is into metal at all should really give Ensiferum a try.

ENSIFERUM!

Fold Metal bassically. I looked into other bands with this kind of sound and I haven't heard anybody play as good as these guys.

Heres a live vid of them playing White Storm

Killswitch Engage - Daylight Dies
My favourite song, despite that techno intro---it's not part of the song and it's about 25 seconds.

 I'm sure the music you listen to is far superior to metal. Whoever wrote that article probably knows little about music.

My music that I listen to has also been bashed by this guy (Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Muse, you know, basically any British prog rock) but man, he's totally on the nail with this one. It's hilarious and making a point.

But that's the thing, it's all opinion. Other than Pink Floyd, who I love, radiohead and muse in my opinion are terrible. I could write something like that about Prog rock, and there will be people that disagree, and people that agree.

I stopped caring about what this guy had to say, right here. "Maybe not hair metal; in retrospect, it had its moments":|

Hair metal flat out sucks.

The rest of what he has to say is crap anyways. He doesn't even address the musical aspects.

If you ask this in the Metal Union you're likely to get much better and more accurate results. You'll probably get less fuss about who was "first", too; the first of anything may be groundbreaking, but thirty years later they rarely stand as the best. Some personal favorites: Rage - Soundchaser, Down, No Fear Thunderstone - Tool of the Devil, Forevermore, Virus Iced Earth - Travel in Stygian, Violate, MelancholyPyramaze (Link to MP3 samples on official site.) Some other great bands, you can probably look up the music yourself (it's getting a bit tiresome): Stratovarius Opeth Blind Guardian Demons and Wizards Dark Tranquillity Symphony X Evergrey Scar Symmetry Into Eternity After Forever Control Denied Dream Evil Firewind Sirenia Quo Vadis Winterfell ...ahh, heck. Why don't you just visit some Metal label web sites? Century MediaSPVMetal BladeNuclear BlastNightmare RecordsNapalm RecordsSpinefarm RecordsInsideOut Records

Some of these are not really hardcore bands - but they are metal anyway:

KoЯn
Lamb of God
Children of Bodom
Slipknot
Slayer
Norma Jeen
Killswitch Engage
Chimaira

That's all I can think of ATM.
