And it literally happened overnight.

Hang on to your hats, America.

And throw away that big, fat styrofoam finger while you’re about it.

There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll just say it. We’re no longer No. 1. Today we’re No. 2. Yes, it’s official. The Chinese economy just overtook the United States economy to become the largest in the world. For the first time since Ulysses S. Grant was president, America is no longer the leading economic power on the planet.

It just happened — and almost nobody noticed.

The International Monetary Fund recently released the latest numbers for the world economy. And when you measure national economic output in “real” terms of goods and services, China will this year produce $17.6 trillion — compared to $17.4 trillion for the U.S.A.

Considering the size of China's population compared to the US, this was inevitable. However, it just shows how much richer we are compared to them. We produce roughly the same amount of goods and services as China with only 1/4 the population of that country.

China works for us not the other way around :)

Remember the progress China has is because capitalism speaks and alot american companies choose to instead of paying a american who bitch and moan and complain every single moment , they can get 100 small china kids to make their produce for them.

Quick if everyone gets in some sort of accident and gets taken to the emergency room we can affect the GDP in a positive way.

And yet we still spend almost four times as much as China does on military.

Seems sustainable to me!

This was posted like a month ago and brushed off. Mostly because GDP takes into account way more then just simple market size.

Like I said before, stop using nominal. It doesn't take most things into account and in terms of GDP PPP China has passed us and that is what most use.

GDP PPP. PPP is GDP, there are two measures of GDP, PPP and Nominal.

Get back to me when your ready to discuss GDP PPP per capita, and Gini Coefficient. At that point we might be able to have a reasonable discussion.

If your rich, the HDI falls to 28th once inequality is taken into account. Good if you are rich, not so much if you are not.

Pretty good if you are middle class. People that are of lowest wealth here can still find reasonable help in comparison to places like India, Russia.

Where is life good in big powerful countries for below middle class folks?

US is in the same complexity of countries like China, Russia, India, Brazil, United Kingdom. Countries with little to no diversity and smaller output can manage their problems.

I think it won't be too long before China might pause and think to itself "Wait a minute, what's stopping us from being the world's superpower!" "Let's have it all for ourselves instead of being somebody else's subsidiary". For a while now China has been more than satisfied with its role in the world's economy mainly as the biggest and most powerful economy of agglomeration and the global political leverage it equipped it with. However, the developed world's lust for cheap labor and effortless affluence might have inflated China and its power. I do hear the argument however that China is just as reliant on the developed world as the latter reliant on it so I'm not sure whether China can pull it off. That is not to say that China would heed reason and decide not to do it, in case reason advises so.

Lets face the facts though a lot of this is false numbers brought forth due to crazy government spending into building projects that return almost zero cash. Not only is the government doing this to mark up the economy artificially but massive campaigns have been put forth to convince the average chines person to put their life worth of saving into such companies to build these places, that promise return but never actually do. Essentially the chine's version of the housing bubble.

I don't think the idea of the economies really matters now. Especially with how damning the UN climate change report is. Things are going to change drastically, and not just politically but geographicaly, along with loss of basic natural resources like the oceans fish stocks or natural forests are going to be what drives the next 50 years of change. Kind of hard to be a super power when you can't feed your insane amount of citizens, due to pollution and over farming/fishing.
