IRS failed to meet the deadline set by Microsoft for windows xp support and didn't upgrade their systems. And now they will be paying nearly $30 million for extended support of windows xp.

Isn't it sweet to see IRS standing on the receiving end. :D

Why in the world are they still using xp? The IRS has in their possession tons of confidential information, our information, and they are leaving it vulnerable to hackers by using that unsecure, outdated software. This is why young people should be in charge of any business, corporation, or gov't agency that uses technology. A younger person would've upgraded to Windows 7 ages ago.

The IRS is still using XP? lol why? And they're even paying Microsoft to extend support for the antiquated and archaic OS from the stone ages that is XP? Funny joke. Besides, and I'm not fully confident of this, I don't think the IRS, given what I assume to be a pretty sensitive and confidential domain that it operates in, should be using the Windows OS to begin with.

So because the IRS was too lazy to upgrade their system tax payers have to pay. If i'm running windows 8 I know the government had the money to upgrade years ago. Granted vista was a disaster. But when w7 came out in 09 they could have upgraded then.

This is hilarious.

There are probably quite a few reasons why the IRS couldn't make the deadline, mostly related to the fact that it's fucking expensive and hellishly time consuming to install a new OS on 110, 000 comps, while making sure that everything works dandy afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised if trying to meet the deadline would have exceeded the $30m price tag (extremely cheap on the scale we're talking about, btw) they're currently paying.

Since there is a current deficit in American government money, I am concerned. Also, considering that Windows 7 is XP, but better, is it worth continuing to use by spending that amount of American tax dollars?

That was kind of a rhetorical question. It must be that something other than incompetence has prevented the IRS from upgrading to modern software. This is the Internal Revenue Service we are talking about. I expect it to be an agency fully aware of the importance of deadlines what with the taxes we pay that they collectively supervise and the relevance of technology.
