Prog rock has been going on since the 60s, many believe it to be a dead genre now that progressive metal is making a come back ( aka tool) but prog rock has always shown talent throughout the years, even now prog rock has great bands just waiting to be discovered. A lot of rock music has roots in the blues ( chuck berry, louie armstrong ect) but much of prog rock is different, it is mostly deeply rooted in jazz rather than blues. Bands like King crimson, Jethro tull and early genesis are an example. Most rock music follows guidlines and bands are judged on how skilled their guitarists are in terms of ability and how rocking they are. But progressive rock constanly shows great guitarists who are yet to be matched in talent, here are 2 examples.

Robert fripp ( king crimson)

John Mclaughlin ( mahavishnu orchestra)

nobody, not hendrix, clapton etc has yet matched these two guys imo. prog rock in the mainstream eye may have died out a bit since the 60s-80s, but there are still tons of great bands to find. this site will help you find some of the best in modern music.

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=37354&FID=3

prog rock will someday have another go at the mainstream, but right now the genre is focused on talent rather than success.

In terms of technicality, in the rock genre, yes.

I don't consider Fripp or McLaughlin better or worse than Clapton or Hendrix though. More technical, true.

I'm sorry, but while there are quite a few talented death metal musicians, I can't call it a harder genre to play than prog rock.

Jazz and chamber classical are probably the most difficult overall.

I don't profess to be proficient at any of the instruments involved...so I don't have an accurate opinion on what genre requires the most skill.

playing fast guitar for a long time requires more endurance than talent, however much I enjoy metal, I would never think that playing fast takes more talent than technical skill.

yes but thats only one person in the band, death metal needs the whole band to keep going hard for the whole song

I play bass, and I find alot of death metal is (generalising here, I know) 0-2-1-0-2-1-0-2-1-0-0-0-0-2-1 etc, etc.. While it's fast, it's not techincally good music. I love metal, with bands like Megadeth, Pantera, Tool and Meshuggah being some of the best I know but good music isn't how difficult it is to play. Look at 'Stairway To Heaven', it's not technically difficult but it's still a masterpiece of music IMO. Prog rock has talent, and potential methinks, it's a breath of relief from the crap we have today.

It's also hard to find, good music is having problems reaching us because it isn't appreciated the way it once was.

Those videos of Fripp seemed pretty tough to play. He's skilled. Im not too familair with Prog Rock though. Even though he can play fast that doesnt necessarilly make the music good. I didnt really like those videos because it just didn't sound good to me imo. He is talented though, no doubt about that.
