I don't get why alot of users on OT like to use the Auto-tune card when explaining why they dislike rap/ hiphop.

While it is true that alot of artists use auto-tune, only a small fraction of them ever catch a record deal and get popular. I think most rap/hip hop fans don't even like auto-tune anymore.

The majority of rappers who do get popular, however, actually do have lyrical ability, and do not use auto-tune. Even better, some of them may sing in their song WITHOUT auto-tune. I can name tons of rappers who have lyrical ability, that are not tupac, biggie, eazy e or ice cube.

Wiz Khalifa (He talks about weed too much, but I still like him)

Jin (this one is nice)

Freddie Gibbs

J.Cole

Big Boi

Big Sean (He does talk about sex, drugs, and money, but he's good at it)

Hell, even Drake!

Anyway, T-Pain is the only artist out right now that still uses auto-tune heavily. Kanye West really only used it in 808 and hearbreaks, and that's 'bout it.

Some more:

Lupe Fiasco

Kid Cudi

Rap... good back in the 80's and 90's. Gave up on it 10 years ago so I dont care. Stick to rock(classic, heavy) and metal.

Maybe people think autotune sounds like crap and they just don't like the rest of the genre?

There are better reasons than that to dislike it - such as the fact that it's repetitive crap.

They way they 'sing' doesn't bother me. Heck, I listen to spoken word poetry all the time. Rather, it's the 'music' that gets on my nerves. So repetitious.

Isn't auto-tuning more prevalent in pop and electronic music, anyway?

It's not that I don't like it because it's auto-tune.

I do't like it because it's a terrible excuse for music.

There's a difference. ;)

The first two were just guys talking with noise in the background. Cannibal Ox and POS are great, but they're underground and not a representation of anything wide spread, but yes they're great and is the reason why I said "usually". This is proper rap in my opinion:

what do you mean not a good representation? NO music you hear that is widespread (i.e. mainstream radio, billboard top 100) is a good representation of that kind of music. you can say that about ALL genres of music. i don't get your point...

Perhaps not in the US, but both songs I listed are very popular in Sweden and Scandinavia. Popular songs are not automatically bad over here. I could list a million other songs, but they'd be in Swedish and since we're talking about rap, that would be pretty mute.

The point is that most American rap is utter garbage. The fact that some decent rappers are trying to survive in a sea of trash doesn't somehow make the trash any better.

whatever, the point is that you were wrong. there are plenty (i can give many more examples if you like) of american hip hop artists that are progressing the genre and trying to take it to that next level. just because they aren't "widespread" means absolutely nothing.

The point is that most American rap is utter garbage. The fact that some decent rappers are trying to survive in a sea of trash doesn't somehow make the trash any better.

you are wrong, there are plenty of great american MCs. list me some of these "great and progressive" rappers you got over there in sweden and scandinavia and i'll list you twice as many american MCs that **** all over those guys.

[QUOTE="IWKYB"] All current rap is garbage, The best was the late 80's rap.

Nope, I'd say that European rap is continuing to develop and has moved far, faaaaaaar away from the money, cars and "hoes"...it actually never went that direction to begin with. I mean, I can understand why some people in the US loath rap if they only understand English.

A great musician once said that geography is ultimately irrelevant.

[QUOTE="Darth-Caedus"]Saying rap is all auto-tune is like saying metal is all screaming. Stupid lazy generalizations. Gustav_Mahler
But metal IS all screaming :s

Those sorts are crappy personally but not all of metal are, their are quite a few catorgories within the metal genre that don't consist of screaming.
