2003/2004 - My first laptop was the high-end Sony Vaio VGN-A115B. A beautiful, premium-built laptop that lasted me a good 5-6 years. My parents bought it for me for school.

2009 - I replaced it with the budget-friendly Samsung R520. It was an okay laptop.

2013 - I replaced the average Samsung with the mid-range Sony Vaio SVF-SVF15A1M2E for university and I still use it to this day.

2016 - I bought a Macbook Pro 13in Retina (2015) model laptop. One of my favourite laptops and I still use it.

Fast forward to 2022, I am thinking of replacing my Sony Vaio... some keys don't work and I don't like the trackpad. Thinking of getting a second-hand ThinkPad to replace the Sony Vaio. I enjoyed using thinkpads at work and heard good things about them, especially the build quality. If you have recommendations, let me know.

How many laptops have you had in your lifetime? Mine is 4.

Three, is I remember correctly. The one I use now has a built-in camera, which is awesome.

3. A Dell XPS 15, an Acer Aspire 5 and a Surface Book 1.

Of the 3 I would probably recommend the Surface Book, due to portability/form factor, lack of bloatware, firmware updates bundled with windows updates etc.

However, would also recommend desktop above all else.

Barely use em.

Use to be primarily for reading stuff in bed, but kindle now, redundant.

My boss has a Surface Pro as a work laptop and it looks amazing (that's because I have never seen one irl). One thing that's holding me back is whether you can upgrade the RAM, SSD and etc. Yeah, I have considered a desktop, but portability is much more convenient in my current situation.

@uninspiredcup: Yay! Finally someone has owned more than me. I was worried for a moment went the rest of the people here owned less than 3.

Probably 3 from memory. the first one was a cheap refurbished Dell, then a HP and currently own a HP Omen.

The build quality of the Omen is definitely cheap compared to the last HP laptop I owned back in 2014. Plus, I miss that Blu-ray drive.

2.

Asus G72gx over a decade ago and MSI GT72S. Gaming laptops used to be my thing but after building my own PC, I haven't touched my laptop since. But that's more due to the fact that my MSI kept having hardware problems and I didn't want to spend +$2000 on another gaming laptop that constantly needs to get sent to the manufacturer for repairs...

Acer laptop. Circa 2007. Meh reliability.

Toshiba laptop. Circa 2009. The Acer laptop broke while I still had an extended warranty, so the retailer gave me this one. Serviceable laptop, but nothing too impressive.

ASUS laptop. Circa 2013. Bought it after Toshiba laptop broke down. Still functional today, albeit running somewhat slowly. Using it as a secondary laptop. The fact that it's still functional today makes me trust ASUS and it is likely the brand I will go for again in the future.

MSI GS73VR 7RF. Circa 2017. Bought it so that I could do more gaming and video editing, but poor design caused damage to the hinge. Had it repaired once under warranty, but then had the same problem after warranty, so I'm stuck with a laptop that can't be shut closed. The battery also died so I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It is essentially reduced to being a desktop at this point. Overall, performance is there, but build quality leaves much to be desired.

@one_plum: Yeah, build quality on laptops has deteriorated over the years. I still have my first Sony Vaio laptop from 18 years ago and the materials are really solid, unlike today's bendy cheap plastic.

We used to have an old ACER laptop in the house 15+ years ago. My brother picked it since he was the tech savvy in the family.

A few years ago I bought the ASUS X552CL-SX032D. Used it primarily on holidays to watch stuff and play video games. It's too slow for today's standards so my dad is the only one still using it.

The current one is either third or fourth. I still have an old ass HP Pavilion from 2000s somewhere (first one) laying around, which I used in the university for projects some handful of years back, because I did not trust myself with bringing newer laptop.

4 personal, 4 for work if I'm remembering correctly

the first laptop I ever had was a 2003 Toshiba that was indestructible. I used it for school as a teenager and was not gentle with it. had some interesting quirks by the end, like if I moved my hands over the keyboard without actually touching anything, the volume would somehow change.

The worst one I had was a Dell Inspiron from maybe 2008 or 2009? It would overheat like crazy and the heat from your wrist on the touch pad while typing would cause it to move the cursor and do random stuff while typing

Two. Both ASUS. Old one which broke after a few years, and my current U36SD which refuses to freaking die.

Two. Both were pieces of junk, but the first one was an expensive piece of junk. Neither lasted too many years.

My first was a Toshiba Satellite A300

ProcessorIntel Core 2 Duo T8100 2 x 2.1 GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo)

Graphics adapterATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

Never purchased another but it was very good for the games I played at the time, WOW, GW2 although it felt like it was going to melt at times under my left hand.

Oh yeah. my first work laptop was a Toshiba and it was a decent machine at the time. My current and previous work laptop are Thinkpad's and amazed how rock solid the build quality is. I was even thinking of getting a used Thinkpad

Two, one was a Dell laptop Inspiron from 2009 that my mom bought for herself but gave it to me since I couldn't figure out how to use it. My brother borrowed it a few times and damaged it. Lasted for four years as it had been dropped outside and the casing came off. Battery would always die and needed to be replaced.

2017, my mom again bought a Inspiron 1501 from Dell and gave it to me. Overall liked it but overtime it started loading slow and the C battery would beep a lot. I attempted to replace it and messed up the keyboard. Ended up destroying the laptop.

2022, again my mom bought a Inspiron 1601 and I like it. Fast and lightweight and this time got a case for it. Hopefully it lasts for years before needing to be replaced. I myself have been wanting a laptop but not sure what's the best brand as Dell is all I buy since we have Credit with the for years.

2006-2008 Asus S96j "barebones" with Intel T5500, Radeon x1600, 2GB

2008-2010 HP 8710w with Intel T9500, Quadro FX3600 (8800,M GTX equivalent), 8GB

This one was a great laptop, got it for 950 GBP brand new on ebay, when the local retailers were selling them for 3000€, sold for 850 GBP two years later.

Moved on to PC after that (used the laptops while going to uni).

3 Laptops.

An Advent 7039. It had an Athlon 64 3000+ and, i think, Radeon mobility 9600 graphics with a whole entire 64MB of Vram. i think the main system memory was 512MB. It lasted me a decade before it finally crapped the bucket. It was also where i started messing around with Linux distros. Ah Mandrake 10.1...always remember the first :).

My second was a Clevo P170SM. It had a Geforce GTX 780M, 16GB of ram and a Core i7 4700MQ. I decided to go all out on a gaming laptop rather than a desktop because i was hopping around from place to place quite a bit for work. I had nowhere to use a desktop really. It was great. I have passed it onto family now and it's still working away no bothers.

I currently have a Tongfang GK7NR0R. AKA the walmart laptop (though i didnt get it from there as i am not in the US). It has a Ryzen 7 4800H (i think), 16GB of ram and an RTX 2060. I have some regrets with this one. They got the basics right. Cooling is good, temps are kept in check and it performs well. But, even though i'm not too fussy on build quality, i still think they cut a bit too deep. The top bezel pops out from the lid when you lift it (i have MacGyvered a Fix). A couple of key caps are losing the paint at the top so the letter is less clear. I had to replace the battery (thankfully an easy job). Also the max brightness on the screen is very meh. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be very sturdy even compared to my old Clevo....but.... :S.

I don't think i will be getting another laptop for a while anyway. I can use desktops again so that's where i spend most of my PC time. For general PC use it will be a long long time before a 4800H feels sluggish.

This is my first but I doubt my last. Always had desktops before but I like being able to take my computer with me if I need to. Coulda done that with my desktops but it was kind of a chore.
