adios cuts if you are leaving, but use the correct form of ir and then the place you are going, if you are going somewhere, tengo que ir does sounds awkward in to me but im just a white kid taking Spanish because i have to

Ok. Because I have this project where we have to do a phone conversation, and it just sounds weird when we're talking then suddenly someone says "Adios! Mucho gusto!"

you could always throw an "ay, tengo mucho tarea" or something like that in there before you say bye for somewhat of a transition
