My surgery has put me out of my incredibly rigorous and competitive high school for three weeks.

I'm catching up on a lot of my reading, but the number of lectures I've missed has really put a dent in my education, and I have been feeling incredibly anxious about it to the point of not being able to sleep well at all for the past few days. I'm baffled as to how I can possibly hope to make up all of my tests and quizzes, and a lot of the more trivial assignments that my teachers have been giving out on a near-daily basis.

In short, I have anxiety problems and being out of school for three weeks has been a shocking experience. :( Man, to think I used to freak out over missing an afternoon...

OT, how do you deal with stress? If my scenario sounds stupid, just think about the last time you were severely stressed, and what you did to help you deal with it. I'm doing all the work I can at home, but there will always been that cloud of work and anxiety hanging over my head until I go back and catch up on everything, potentially over my Christmas vacation in a month as well.

I have tried breathing deeply and listening to calming music, which has helped a little. Any other suggestions? What do you do?

Games and talking to friends. Movies are great too.

Edit: Also try to tell friends how you are feeling. It's great to unload your feelings.

I find something to get engulfed in. Often it's TV series. When I'm on a really bad 'low' (occasionally I will get on an extremely severe major depressive episode that may last a week or a month, sometimes triggered by life events and sometimes just randomly) I let myself become almost obsessed with something, which allows me to distance myself from my stress and live outside my own mind, I guess you could call it, where my stresses don't have any effect on me. It sounds crazy and really extreme but it's not really. It's not like I make up imaginary friends, I just surround myself with something and am always learning about it so that I don't have the time to revert back to my stressful and anxious thoughts.

Take a deep breath, google search on google news "child killed" and suddenly remove all self pity on my petty BS that I consider stress.

i can definitely see how that would be stressing. having surgery alone would probably be stressful enough, but having to worry about how you're going to get all your schoolwork would make it twice as bad, i assume.

hopefully your teachers understand the situation you're in, if you have to like stay in the hospital and stuff i think they should cut you some slack.

Seriously, just kick back, watch TV and have a few beers (if you are of age). Hope the surgery goes/went well. :)

My teachers definitely understand -- I have been in contact with them. They each wrote up a paragraph explaining what I can be doing when I'm feeling able enough, which has helped me quite a bit since I received the email a few days ago. Nonetheless, outside of catching up on my reading and starting a research paper, the stress still lingers on like a horrible, painful burden for the many tests, quizzes, and various assessments (coupled with all of the important lectures) that I have missed. Thank you for your kindness. I had to stay in the hospital for a week. :(

Thank you for the suggestion. I have ordered an anthology of HP Lovecraft from a library, so hopefully that will arrive at my local one within a couple of days.

My strong pain medications have allowed me a lot of nap time. ;) Fretful, and often broken up by me spontaneously waking up from anxiety, but naps nonetheless. :)

Music and games I have been doing in my spare time. Drugs... no. I don't do drugs. Ever. Miyazaki, Death Note, and Fullmetal Alchemist are amazing (relatively new to this whole genre), not a huge fan of Hentai though.

I just saw Psycho and Psycho II for the first time in ages. It was nice to kick back and relax. Actually my friends came over the day I got out of the hospital with a card signed with personal messages from most people in my class. I never knew that I had such a positive impact on so many people. I was truly touched -- one of the happiest moments of my life thus far. The stress and anxiety are always looming like a dark cumulonimbus, unfortunately. Friends make life better in general though. :) I ranted to my friend about my stress, which made me feel a little better as well. We usually rant to each other in the darkest hours of the night over Facebook when we've both been working for 5+ hours and still have many more to go. ;)

This really helps. If there's something that can really draw you in and get your mind firmly off everything else, you won't keep thinking about the source of your stress. Anyway, it's good that your teachers understand your situation. I don't know what it's like at your high school, but you may be able to request for alternative arrangements for your grading in terms of quizzes and exams, given your extended absence from school. Obviously, you have to do your part to catch up on the material you've missed, too. Have some faith in yourself - you clearly are able to study properly and have a good level of learning ability, seeing how you made it in your rigorous high school in the first place. ;)

Lately video games and manga has kept me busy from stressing out over anything.

Music use to help a lot but anymore it just feels like that makes it worse.

the classic song "tubthumping" by chumbawumba. if lyrics like "i get knocked down, but i get up again" don't help, then i don't know

personally i just hold it all in and have a bit of a breakdown every now and then. not the best idea, but hey...

When I was in high school, which wasn't too long ago, the teachers would give you quite a while to complete all of your make-up work. It's not like, complete it before you come back or you're screwed. Therefore, I never worried about it. I do like to watch tv to alleviate my stress.

...same way as I stop being angry/sad. I realize the futility of such emotions and stop having them. They serve a purpose in the moment (stress motivates action/change). But beyond that, they are worthless. So I let the feeling go. With stress it is either something you CAN control (if so, do something) or something you CANNOT control (no point in worrying then)

I usually try to occupy my mind with gaming or i go to a friend's place. Alternatively i also share some of my life with a friend, help me feel better sometime.

A odd manner is i pet my kitties and hug them, it somehow help me at time.
