If you haven't already heard, the impoverished nation of Haiti, whose infrastructure was already tenuous, has been hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which has utterly flattened the capital, and officials fear that hundreds of thousands may have died in its wake. The US Department of State, consequently, has put up a post detailing how you can help in the wake of this tragedy.

If you have a cell phone, it's as simple as texting:

  • HAITI to 90999 if you live in America (adds a $10 donation to your phone bill).
  • Haiti to 45678 if you live in Canada (adds a $5 donation to your phone bill).
  • GIVE to 70077 in the UK (adds a £5 donation to your phone bill).

Or, if you want to give more, you can also donate to any of these:

  • Compassion International
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • Food for the Hungry
  • International Medical Corps
  • Mercy Corps
  • Oxfam
  • Partners in Health
  • Red Cross
  • Save the Children (or here for a 300% match)
  • UNICEF
  • World Vision

...and several others listed here.

I've verified via Charity Navigator that all of the above have at least a three-star rating, which means that they all use money efficiently to ensure that it goes to those whom they intend to help, not to administrative costs and overhead; and also via the Better Business Bureau that all of the above have met all the standards of accountability.

You can also give blood, if you don't have money. See the Red Cross' web site or BloodSource for information on how to do so.

Please donate what you can. Every little bit helps. The country was quite simply unprepared for a calamity of this magnitude, and by all accounts it's in complete shambles. It's at the darkest times in human history that it is more important than ever for the human spirit to be bright.

If you have any other tips, ways people can help, or similar things, please, by all means, post them. If you've donated, post to add your voice in solidarity as well (or, if you wish, PM me and say that you wish to remain anonymous). Please keep politics and debate out of this thread - now is quite simply not the time.

And a huge thanks to everyone who has donated thus far:

Anyone know of any sort of texting service for Europe because I don't have a credit card. My parents would probably donate something via credit card, however.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any - I'd say that talking to your parents would be the best option.

I'm pretty sure Red Cross already have information on their homepage about how you can help. At least the Norwegian part of Red Cross has.

Do you have a link to anything that would give people information on where to go to do that? That would certainly sound like a worthwhile thing to add.

Canadians -- if you want to donate by text message instead of carrier-moose or e-beaver, you can donate $5 by texting "Haiti" to 45678.

More info.

LOL. DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS has been there helping for a long time now. Sadly, their 3 clinics were destroyed in the quake. They are helping people from tents they set up. If you want to help their efforts to help others, you can donate by following the info in this link: www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate

Here is a link telling about their damaged buildings, FYI:

SAVE THE CHILDREN also has offices there, and they have already sent out teams on bikes to take underage kids that are wandering the streets alone to area shelters. They have a link set up to assist their efforts as well:

Just FYI because I've heard some confusion from younger users and friends, the $10 if you text will be added on to your cell phone bill. So, if you don't pay your own cell phone bill yet and your parents do, please ask them for permission first. Another great way to be sending to Haiti would be through Partners in Health, an organization that has been providing relief in Haiti for the past 20 years.

If you or someone you know has a credit card, any of the links in the first post of this thread should work. All of those organizations, to my knowledge, accept donations from people from any country.

Awful, awful event. Everyone should stop and think about how they can help out. A small sacrifice of time and money out of our daily routines can go a long way toward helping the folks who are suffering not far off of our shores. I fear that this will not be Haiti's last major affliction; it is certainly not its first.

If one would prefer to donate to a Christian organization, here is a list of several. Of those listed, I'm familiar with Samaritan's Purse. From what I've heard of them in the past, they are very effective in what they do.

Thanks, I've added links to the organizations to which that page links. I couldn't find Hands & Feet Project or World Concern on Charity Navigator, which means that I can't verify their efficacy, so I've left those two off.

An earthquake is like one of the worst disasters that can happen. The most painful thing is that most people dont die quickly but have to "wait" for their "inevitable" death for hours and even days.

There are situations where a loved one is screaming from below and you cant do **** about it, my god that's even worse than death.:(

Thank You so very much for all of the info on where we can all help! I think it is every person's duty in this world to help out there fellow brothers and sisters in times of need. My prayers are with them and I will personally find one of the ways you listed or donate blood or maybe even both to help them in their time of need. May God Bless them and help them in their time of need! :)
