Gay-Killing Game Pulled from Google Play

Wow. This is bizarre

I thought my mate was full of it when he said he played a game doing this but wow. Here is the text for people not wanting to click the link.

"Play and do not be gay!" reads the description of a free mobile phone game downloaded 10,000 times from Google Play before it was pulled from the Android app store.

Ass Hunter, the game in question, was uploaded by developer App Day on 5 November, and puts players in control of a man tasked with hunting and shooting gay men portrayed as predators.

Its description calls Ass Hunter a "legendary game, where you are hunterand your mission is to kill gays as much as you can. Remember! When they catch you they will do with you whatever they want."

The app managed to pass Google's moderators and get onto the Play app store before the company was alerted to its presence and content, and removed it.

A spokesman for gay rights charity Stonewall issued a response to the game, saying to ITV: "This will be incredibly offensive to a lot of people.

"We're glad to see they've acted quickly to take it down buttechnology companies have a responsibility to help protect people, particularly young people, from incredibly offensive material which portrays gay men as predators and with characters whose sole mission it is to murder. It's an incredibly damaging message."

Google have yet to comment on the game, but did tell ITV that they do not comment on individual apps.

In August Google were criticised for allowing a game called "Bomb Gaza" - a self-explanatory game about the Israel-Palestine conflict - to be made available through their app store. In 2011 Google again angered the LGBT community when an app called "Is My Son Gay?" provoked controversy.

We all have our stances on the LBGT community and whether you agree or disagree, seeing this game in action made me feel uncomfortable. What do you guys think? Have any of you seen/played this controversial game?

It's a shame it managed to get by the moderators. Really distasteful stuff.

I'm sorry but I failed to see why is this stuff is on OT when it's a mobile game meaning this kind of stuff doesn't belong OT. So are we now going to talk about Games here on OT?

Yes but the main topic of discussion is the gay killing in it. I can see where you're coming from though. I thought OT was more appropriate considering System wars looks down on Mobile gaming.

To be honest I think OT is the right place for this discussion since we're not really discussing the game itself (graphics, story, gameplay) but the fact that someone's hate for gay people drove them to create a game about killing gays. Gay hate is not really Mobile Discussion material, right? =)

That's true. Also, I think we can play a little bit loose with the rules seeing as how the forum is nearly dead anyway.

Sure, the topic is a bit "iffy", but do we really want to be THAT strict with the rules when hardly any discussion happens here anyway? At least it's something to discuss.

Why is this news exactly? The cyber world is full of much more disturbing stuff. Many attempt to pass moderation of the major platforms, few manage which are taken down soon enough.

I think a game where you shoot straight people with a glitter gun that makes them gay would be better.

This did not get past the moderators. There are no moderators that approve every app for Google Play. They are only looked at when reported. That's part of an open market. I don't see how people get mad at Google for this.

I'm surprised 10,000 people downloaded it.

This isn't the first time a "something/somebody" killing game is released on the internet.

Are we not allowed to kill gay people in video games now?

Sounds like a classy game. I'm also a big fan of games where you play as a psycho/villain.
