Hmm.. There is quite alot. Since most of the music i listen to, would be considered alternative it's a hard decision. But, Animal Collective, Liars, Menomena, Sun Ra and Final Fantasy, i guess.
Hmm...Smashing Pumpkins (i'm loving Zeitgeist right now), Dinosaur Jr, The Cure, Radiohead, Nirvana, the list goes on (right now i'm listening to some Placebo...i'm as of yet undecided on them)

As for me, Third Eye Blind. I found one of their old CDs in my moms music collection the other night and thoughy it looked like it might be good. One of my favorite bands now.

I would say they were with the albums Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Meddle and Dark Side... then they gradually became a hard-rock group and make borderline metal albums like the Wall...

Nope...they are classic rock. Alternative came about as an alternative to...rock of the day...which we now refer to as...classic rock.;) You can sub genre them to prog rock if you want...but they aren't alt.

I've never heard a single song from pre-Dark Side era Floyd on any classic rock radio station for just that reason. I hardly think they were really trying to appeal to the masses with those albums. As a whole they were certaintly more of a classic rock, avant-guarde group then "alternative" since the older more experimental albums did not define their career like the Velvet Underground, but once upon a time...

They were part of that generation of rock music. Yes...their music is played on classic rock stations...not alt rock stations. Ever. Second alt didn't exist back then. Sorry. Alt came about in the 80's/
