Im a beginner for longboarding/skating and I can balance on the board ( i no i no im noob ), but should I wear a helmet for longboard cruising? if im using it to go home from school and from places? people say I should but I dont think something crazy will happen and i wont be going down hills because that is scary as hell since there are no brakes. maybe ill wait for the 1st time I fall off the board and if i dont hit my head ill buy a helmet, I see tons of peopel that dont wear helmets for cruising

If I feel I won't die, then yes. However if I do feel I will die and I don't wear a helmet, this is what happens when I fall:

Unless you're going for some INSANE ****, or you're on a huge vert ramp, you probably don't need it. Then again, you'll probably use one after you get a life-threatening concussion :P

This depends..if youre going down a steep hill yes id wear a helmet but if its just going down a flat sidewalk then hell no. Parents only make kids wear helmets because they think theyre doing something thats as dangerous as the x games. if you can get serious head injuries..yes i would wear one..if you cant then to hell with them.

I used to skate and i've broken a few bones but never hit my head. It's kind of an instinct to move your head before it hits the ground...

I've been skating about 8 years (not as much lately because college) without wearing a helmet ever and I never needed one. I did break two bones though, but never an injury that would've been prevented by a helmet. Besides riding a longboard on a sidewalk with a helmet would look lame.

I don't skateboard, but when I go biking I wear a helmet. I was saved by one when I was in High Schoool, never once questioned wearing one again.

I never skateboarded but I used to Rollerblade a lot and I always wore a helmet. It just feels safer with one. You have no idea how many skateboarders and longboarders I've seen on campus topple over as they headed to class because there was something like a pebble in the way. And most of them always toppled forward.

Yeah the first time you wake up form being knocked out you will start to realize the value of wearing a helmet.. And hold a few of your friends faces out of the pool of blood until the ambulance arrives will also inspire some rethinking of balancing safety and the "cool" factor... Helmets are smart and anyone who disagrees just doesnt know any better...

I remember when I used to ride BMX a lot, I didnt get enough speed up a hill and I fell back onto the asphalt. If it wasnt for the helmet I'd probably have a few stitches in the back of my head. Thing was when I'd do this stuff with my friends, if you stack they wont help. You gotta pick yourself up and continue.

If you are just long boarding I don't think a helmet is terribly necissary. If you were skating ramps at a skate park on the other hand I would say yes you need one. I would highly recomend wearing wrist gaurds. I have seen one to many skaters and skateboarders with broken wrists because they put their hands out when they fell.

When I used to skateboard I only wore helmets at skate parks, other then that you should be fine. My friend longboards though and has fallen one and banged up his body pretty bad. His hands and back were all cut up. I say it is a good idea to wear a helmet when longboarding since you can pick up some immense speed on them.

All of the longboarders I see around campus never wear helmets but I suggest that you do, especially if you're new at it. Besides just falling by yourself due to inexperience, you cannot always count on everyone around you to be aware of their surroundings. People often times are talking to their friends, texting on their cell phones, or are somehow otherwise distracted. Remember that those people can cause you to have an accident as well.

I keep the following in mind and always wear my helmet (even though I look like a complete dork): I can be lucky a thousand times (safe and accident-free), but I only need to be unlucky once. Walk away from a wreck with some cuts and bruises or potentially be carried away?

I've been street skating for about 6 years and in all that time have only bumped my head once.

I was going full speed in a parking lot and tried ollieing over a large gap.. hooked my board on the edge on the other side of the gap and instinctively rolled. I bumped my head slightly but besides that I was competely fine. You get a lot more minor wrist and leg injuries skating then anything else.

I'd recommend wearing a helmet for vert skating but not street.

I don't skateboard, but according to state law, I may have to, so I would wear the safety helmet. I need one to ride my scooter or six year old bike. I learned how to ride on that bike. Thus I still have it. Thus I can't fit on it since I've grown over the course of six years!
