I find myself lately looking up the meaning of words before I use them. Never used to though. I used to just use words how they were used in movies or TV shows or how adults used them to make myself look smart in front of other adults. Now I feel like an idiot if I do such a thing.

I guess my English 2 class really rubbed off on me.

What say you, OT?

In normal speech, I rarely use words that are susceptible to me making a mistake relative to its actual meaning. However, when I type (even during instant messaging) I love playing around with a larger and more flavorful vocabulary and will often look up a word before I use it.

A larger vocabulary used correctly is a sign of cleverness and wit and I strongly appreciate and respect anyone who does so. However, people who are clearly ignorant of what they are saying and only use larger words to appear smart are annoying.

No offense intended, but that's a good way to make yourself look stupid, context can be tricky sometimes. Knowing the definition of words before you use them is a good policy.

It means having the quality of iron or full of iron. Like "That thar is a real irony sword" or "Dis here spoon tastes very irony"

I do. On the rare occasion that I muck up a word I usually correct myself before anybody else does. With that being said, i've found myself checking the definition for more and more words, or using a thesaurus to learn new ones. University will do that to you.

I like learning new words. I am constantly looking up definitions of words that I hear. So, I always know what the word means before I use it.

I wonder what the process is when they put a new word in the dictionary. I imagine many lulz were had when this was in the process of being added.

Everyone should only use words they know, words are amazing like willows on the windows, or stones in a pound, the ripples move out and show how inept you truly are.

In English, sometimes I probably have used words a bit wrong or completely wrong.

But I usually use a translation tool before I use a word that I think I might not fully understand.

A while ago i said something to my cousin about my thoughts not being cogent, and he called me on it. He was like, I'm going to look that word up! I thought "D*mn... I usually get away with it though, even if I realize I used it wrong afterwards. In spite of this, I actually am possessed of a wide a varied vocabulary that can adapted to a myriad of circumstances with nary a caesura.

i dont have spell check at work, it is one of the reasons my spelling is better when i am drunk on the weekends, though my context becomes feculent in comparison

UltraZero

Some people use it to describe any sort of coincidence, but that's wrong. I'll illustrate with a simple example:

If you run into someone you were just thinking about, that's not ironic. That's just a coincidence. If a porn star happens to be from Pure Virgin Town, Utah, that's ironic.

I think I know what I'm saying or I really wouldn't bother trying, our understanding of language and meaning though is reinforced when we use it, so instead of just thinking about what to say just say it and see how people react, besides even if you think you know what you want to say you may not articulate as you wish, or other people might not understand you anyways, there's always going to be a losses in meaning between intended meaning, articulation, delivery, people listening, people interpreting what you say, and so on, communication isn't 100% guaranteed.

You could use it because you heard used in a certain context. Then you'd feel so proud of yourself for using a new word , you'd start using all the time. Then that fateful day comes when you use in the wrong context and people will think you're an idiot and laugh at you.
