Do college apartments monitor internet usage.

I moved into my college apartment saturday of last week, and was wondering do they go through your computer to see what you are doing. They foorce all of us to register our computers into the network by sept 12. I was wondering will they be iffy about the sites I go on or the things I download.

Most do, they won't care if you view NSFW material in the privacy of your own room, what they do care about is piracy as well as simply the amount of data you download. I know at my university each student ID is given a maxium of 1gb a day. That may sound like a lot but if you live on campus I wouldn't be surprised if people exceed that.

Thats the thing my roomates and I bought our own, but now we still have to register the router.

I bought my own modem and router from an internet service provider and I use that network, is mine,no monitoring and no limited data. Whenever I feel like switching I just use campus' internet.Darthkaiser

mabye it is just so they can monitor you if you are ever conntected to it. Just use the internet you own.

If colleges tried to monitor people's porn usage they'd have to have a tech team larger than the student body itself.

i did do a fair amount of torrenting but my buddys in IT helped me make sure it went un noticed

it's funny because my old roommate blamed the entire dorm when the internet moved slow because he thought they were looking up pron.

Turns out the room that always had a party was signing up for pron websites every other night..Dude showed us how many viruses his one laptop had. :lol: :lol:

If you don't want them screwing with you invest in a mobile broadband device. I know Clear has unlimited plans for around 40 bucks a month but the connection speed isn't much better than what you would expect with 4G speed. Or, you could skip the dorms and just get an apartment.

But seriously, I doubt they care what you're doing as long as you're not downloading child porn or hacking into Pentagon servers from your dorm room. You're far from the only person out there who uses the Internet to look at boobs. Now, if they actually block those pages you have some problems.

Just don't do anything obviously illegal, like torrenting gigs and gigs of music and movies. I don't know how they would feel about porn. You're over 18, so it shouldn't be illegal, but they might ask you to stop anyway. I always had my own connection through an ISP, so I'm not sure.

But I do know you shouldn't torrent. I knew more than one person who was expelled from my alma mater for doing that.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. Pretty much everyone watches porn, I can assure unless it's some overly Christian college then they don't give a damn.

My college only blocks torrents but I was free to direct download anything I chose with the freedom of an unlimited bandwidth.

Though, there was this one time that they blocked Youtube for a day. Needless to say, that didn't end too well.

not that I know of, but that was four years ago.

They did block a lot of well-known pirate sites, though.

from what I've heard they only monitor the amount of bandwidth you use up. Outside of that they most likely won't care what it is you are doing.

a few months ago he asked us on facebook for help to clean his computer off from the viruses :lol:
