I would ****fy them as gothicish symphonic metal at this point. Although people will tell you theyre black metal, they were actually melodic death metal at one point. Never black metal.

you're severly mistaken as to what death metal is if thats what you think

any good death metal band has melody, a lot of them mix it with extreme heavyness

some death metal bands like early inflames are all melody, and arent that heavy at all

but mudvayne actually sucks though, no lie about that.

Oh, and don't listen to Cannibal Corpse. They in fact have no musical talent, and just use the concept of death metal and gore as a capitalist concept to get money.

Anyways, check out Morbid Angel's "Blessed Are The Sick". One of the definitive death metal albums. Or listen to At The Gates - The Red In The Sky is Ours. That album title is really something. Great melodic death metal.

Gorguts - Obscura and The Erosion of Sanity are two of the best death metal albums I have heard

Spawn of Possession > Necrophagist. Because as good as Muhammed is, he can't write an interesting song structure. Which may not be a problem for some of you, but it is for me.crucifine

Nile (comes out July 17th), Spawn of Possession, Cryptopsy, Psycroptic, Arsis, Suffocation, Arch Enemy, old In Flames, lots of bands heh.

But my favorite would have to be Spawn of Possession.

It's not. Cannibal Corpse sucking massive amounts isn't something new. Most people already seem to know this - but Gamespot is just a little behind on everything. People listening to these guys get the wrong idea of death metal, or don't seem to know about it to see why the bands like Cannibal Corpse suck, while bands like Morbid Angel and Athiest stand out.

Nile, cos they are the win, are my favourite PURE death metal band, but I prefer melodic death and black metal myself. July 20th is when Ithyphallic comes out, awesome.

Deicide, Suffocation, Atheist, Pestilence, Cynic, andDeath are some of my faves. Nile's pretty good too,I'm seeing them on the 19th.

AndI don't care how technical the music is, Necrophagist is just boring.
