** This news is around 10-15 days old, so you might've heard of it before**

China's first known stealth aircraft just emerged from a secret development program and was undergoing high-speed taxi tests late last week at Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute's airfield. Said to be designated J-20, it is larger than most observers expected—pointing to long range and heavy weapon loads.

The J-20 is a single-seat, twin-engine aircraft, bigger and heavier than the Sukhoi T-50 and the F-22. Comparison with ground-service vehicles points to an overall length of 75 ft. and a wingspan of 45 ft. or more, which would suggest a takeoff weight in the 75,000-80,000-lb. class with no external load. That in turn implies a generous internal fuel capacity. The overall length is close to that of the 1960s General Dynamics F-111, which carries 34,000 lb. of fuel.

The J-20 has a canard delta layout (like Chengdu's J-10) with two canted, all-moving vertical stabilizers (like the T-50) and smaller canted ventral fins. The stealth body shaping is similar to that of the F-22. The flat body sides are aligned with the canted tails, the wing-body junction is clean, and there is a sharp chine line around the forward fuselage. The cant angles are greater than they are on the Lockheed Martin F-35, and the frameless canopy is similar to that of the F-22.

The engines are most likely members of the Russian Saturn AL-31F family, also used on the J-10. The production version will require yet-to-mature indigenous engines. The inlets use diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) technology, first adopted for the F-35 but also used by Chengdu on the J-10B—the newest version of the J-10—and the Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder.

The main landing gears retract into body-side bays, indicating the likely presence of F-22-style side weapon bays ahead of them. The ground clearance is higher than on the F-22, which would facilitate loading larger weapons including air-to-surface munitions. Chinese engineers at the Zhuhai air show in November disclosed that newly developed air-to-ground weapons are now required to be compatible with the J-20.

Looks like China finally has developed an operational stealth fighter.

People keep saying it's made in China therefore it'll suck or whatnot, but you have to know that this isn't made with the same substandard that China churns out for the International world with their toys and clothes. If the plane malfunctions, it's off with the head of whoever built it.

Not surprised. China's been updating their military for a good while now - they get the fact that you can't compete in modern warfare using sheer numbers. Their infantry and ground vehicles are already good enough to handle Western counterparts on good terms, so now they've gotta work on force projection and air support.

Yeah the F-35 looks wicked

.....but I still love the F-15 Eagle, they aren't stealth, but between them and American pilots, China still doesn't have a chance.

Here's the good ole F-15:

Still the ultimate bad-ass Fighter thats never been shot down in combat.

....and its much less expensive

What happened to the good ole days of warfare?

Where infantry were the fate of the battle and a single mans bravery on foot taking out an arti position or machine gun could decide the fate of many, now its just who ever has the best toys.

Isn't that China's main driving force behind pretty much everything? Like the bullet train. They saw that the Europeans and Japanese have perfected theirs, so they decided to invest their own with a new twist-make it go even faster.

So yeah, I'm not surprised at all if they got their motivation for this from the F-22.

Supposed to be cheaper to manufacture than both the American fighters (f-22, f-35) and the new Russian fighter. Also apparently it may have been created from stolen U.S. stealth tech based on an f-117A nighthawk that was shot down over Serbia during the Bosnian crisis in the 90's.

the CHinese are masters of taking good ideas and copying them. Anyone that does business in China knows this, and is especially wary of it when entering any sort of agreement with them.

So what? the plane is essentially an F22 clone, but worse. The F22 is on it's way out in the U.S. anyways, China will have to haul ass if it ever wants to catch the U.S. in aircraft technology. Bring on the F35s!

I wouldn't be so sure about that. There is talk about refunding production of the F-22. As it is, we will still have at least 187 F-22s so I don't see that as being on the way out.

it looks cool, I will give them that, and its biiiiiiig lol. I like that.

The truth is, though, that we will never know how good it really is for quite some time. There are many things to consider:

1. Actual radar signature: how stealthy is it?

2. Range: how far can it go? Can it cruise at supersonic speeds without afterburners like the F-22?

3. How effective is its radar? Will it be able to engage multiple targets on its own, or is it built on the decades-old Soviet model of relying on ground radar like the Iraqi Air Force was (which was their failing)?

4. How maneuverable is it? Can it match the thrust vectoring the F22 has and the Russians have been developing?

5. Payload: what is its loadout? Is it an air-superiority/interceptor? Or is its size indicative of a fighter-bomber as people have speculated?

6. etc, etc...

I do not doubt it is a fine plane, but I question the integrity and the ability of the Chinese to "clone" other nation's aircraft and vehicles. This is a military that is built upon the designs of mainly Russian military assets from the Cold War, and now we see a plane that appears to be built off of American plans, which I know we did not give them

What I meant mostly is that China's plane is worse than the F22, and now the U.S. is shifting focus from the F22 to better planes. By "on it's way out" I meant of being the focus of our new technology. China is just coming out with this plane and we are already focused on better planes than the one it is mirrored after. Of course we sill still use F22s, they are amazing jets.

Care to provide a link to the loss of any F-22 at any time since it first debuted? The F-22 wasn't around when NATO went to Kosovo.

There was one plane lost in the bombing of kosovo or Yugoslavia. i don;t know what it was called. China bought its parts apparently

Never mind it was the F117.

October_Tide

Hell, Russian and Chinese military hardware is cheaper than the American ones most of the time. The Su-35 is around the 45-65 million dollar mark while the F-35 is like 130 million per unit. Both of them are multirole fighters, except the F-35 is capable of stealth.
