What is the employee discount for Best Buy and its relationship to the new/old consoles? He says he can get the X1 for $100 and some change off (so around 375$ ish total) because the discount is what Best Buy pays for it plus 5%. Is this true? I find it really hard to believe  Best Buy is only paying 350 or so for the console. Does anyone have any experience with this?

0-5 dollars. There is no markup on console - store doesnt make any money on them. All the money is in acessories. Games is like 5 bucks too.

THANK YOU. Sorry for the caps but this is exactly what I figured. I mean, come on man. The systems BARELY sell at a profit. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt though. Maybe he does get a discount. Let's say they sell the system at 450 and add 5 percent plus tax, i mean, he'll still get the system for around 500. It doesn't really matter. Actually, my Walmart discount is probably better than his.

I worked there and we didn't get any discount on consoles. I think games were about $10 cheaper. Whoever told you that was lying.

there's no way you'd get anymore than $5 off the new console

Right and I can get 40 and 50 off of them with my store discount. But I'm still not going to. It's not worth it. I'm just gonna sell everything I have now at GameStop and buy like one or two games at launch.

had a friend that worked at Best Buy. I think he got a pretty good discount on the stuff all employees are required to smoke to lower their IQ's by about 50 points and turn them into babbling monkeys.

Electronics store I used to work at (not Best Buy) would be cost +10% with a yearly cap on the amount you got off....

I don't remember any console that we were able to get anything off on.

I use to work at BestBuy, the old discount was like cost plus 5% I think, but the new one is the same ,but you cant get more than a 50% discount from the sale price.

For example:

I was able to get a $30 HDMI cable for like $4, but.............

After the no more than 50% off rule I can only get the HDMI cord for no less than $15.

Games I got like $5-$10 off, consoles you got nothing off, the best thing the discount is for now are cords and audio equipment.

I believe NO store is allowed to give Employees discounts on the PS4/XBone. I remember reading somewhere that employees had to pay the same price as everyone else....just can't remember where that was.

It is possible, on some things. I work at a store that sells similar things to best buy, and our discount on Xbox/console stuff is 20%, but other things like audio-visual we can get cost + 5%. I've never purchased an actual xbox from work, but there's a chance that it may be cost+5 but markup on stuff might be low, so even if that is the case OP may not get $100 off. Some things it's better to just wait for a big sale because some stuff (especially around the holidays) go below cost as doorcrashers.
