Belgium scores three second-half goals to down U.S.

CLEVELAND -- After the stomping, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann got stumped.

Not long after his team was overrun 4-2 on Wednesday night in an international game by a talented Belgium team that dominated the Americans for 90 minutes, Klinsmann was asked if there were three positives to be taken from the loss.

"Um," Klinsmann said, pausing. "Three? You challenge me with three?"

Klinsmann smiled and then danced around coming up with an adequate answer.

There really wasn't much he could say.

Christian Benteke scored two goals in the second half and Marouane Fellaini had another as Belgium took advantage of U.S. defensive breakdowns and scored three times after halftime in a one-sided thrashing of the Americans, who hoped the match - and an upcoming one Sunday in Washington D.C. against Germany - would help get them ready for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

American soccer will always be second fiddle to most other continents wince we have at least three sports that are far more popular (football, baseball and basketball).

I always love when people make a big deal about the US losing in a sport that the country couldn't care less about. News flash to non-US folk, we don't care when we get beat at soccer and odds are, nobody even knew the game was happening. Save your bragging for countries that actually care. :P

Well, Belgium has a golden generation of players to be honest. Anywhere from defense to attack they are stacked with top quality personnel. It wasn't surprising at all.

I honestly wonder what percentage of Americans even know this tournament is happening. I'd be shocked if it was more than 2-3%.

0% since there is actually no tournament. It was just a friendly Also, not really a surprise since the US team is not as good as some people over there like to think.

The only time the average American probably cares about soccer is world cup time, and it's most likely for silly patriotism reasons.

Baseball, as boring as it is, is huge in latin countries and Japan. Also basketball is huge in Europe and China so the comparison could be better.

Yea NASCAR is probably a better comparison. Huge in America (technically #1 in attendance) and yet virtually non-existent outside the U.S.

Strange, I'm from Europe and know of no one who cares about Basketball .... at the insistence of some of my American friends that it was in fact huge there I asked a selection of friends who Lebron James was and not a single one knew that either. I think instead of huge you mean, not non-existent :P

I was just about to say this. Basketball and Baseball are popular worldwide, and Hockey has followings in other countries, even within the NHL teams.

NASCAR has virtually no fanbase internationally, and there are reasons for that.

Yea but the types of car they use aren't popular at all outside the U.S. and yet #1 'sport' in the U.S. Of course there are similarities with other racing just as rugby/football or baseball/cricket are related.

He didn't say anything about an American player being popular, he said the sport.

Basketball is popular in Europe, there are leagues over there and that says enough.

I think mainly Spain and parts of Eastern europe it has a decent following, but its microscopic compared to say football. Just spent a week in Spain and even there saw and heard nothing about it at all.
