Poll Are you glad that GS forums, including OT, are dying? (68 votes)

Yes 26%
No 74%

I am. People here warned Gamespot staff that, based on beta testing, the new changes weren't welcomed. Then the changes came and people complained but the "fixes" have been coming at a turtle's pace. Days, weeks have passed and this site is still a mess. Saturday night and this place is a desert. You reap what you sow.

I always check up on these forums every year or two. The layout is horrendous and with reddit its not that big of a shock this particular forum is dying.

I am not glad, but I do feel GameSpot should have come to an understanding when they were being warned.

I think the fact that the forums are dying are threefold. The first reason is the ToU changes that were made 2 years ago. Everyone wanted a freer ToU and they finally got it and all hell broke loose. People being outright trolled, cursing, and such changed how things played out here. Some people may not have liked it even though others did. The people who wanted the changed disappeared and never came back. Funny eh?

Second, the new design has played a part in some people's decision to leave. The fact that it was a buggy mess and still has a bunch of them, as well as lacking features that most websites and forums have, especially the ability to know what thread you have posted in and being able to go to the first unread post when clicking on the thread, makes it easy to follow the conversations in said threads. That this feature is totally lacking on the GS forums is glaringly evident and there is no evidence that it will be implemented except that it is on the list to implement. There is no timetable as to when such a feature will be even though such as feature is a very basic feature in all forum software right out of the box. That this is home grown code is very evident.

Third, some of those who used to post here regularly have now gone on to college or have graduated and now are finding that real life has demands on them that they didn't have before when they would stay on the forum for hours.

With yesterday's DDoS attack, yes, they had one yesterday afternoon/evening, I could only make one post in a thread and had trouble loading pages, it has been said that it is too expensive to prevent such attacks and there is nothing that GS can do about it and will happen again. If there are means to prevent it, then why cannot they do so even if expensive? People are not going to want to keep visiting GS if they cannot even access it. No one is going to want to visit if they feel that their means of access can be compromised.

No, but I am indifferent. I've been in an out of this forum for 11 years. I've seen it ebb and flow, users come and go. But, back then there weren't as many alternatives.

@WhiteKnight77: Ah, so that's the reason this site was über slow yesterday. Still, OT seems to be even more dead today than usual.

I haven't had time to come here much anymore so I don't really know what the situation is in terms of this place "dying," but if it really is, then why would I be happy? There are a lot of complaints you can level at this site, but in general I've liked this place and the people here, and it was a huge influence when it came to things like movie and music recommendations. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I wouldn't be happy to see it go completely.

No. But what can we do? Gamespot doesn't even care. Haven't they seen the numerous threads , polls(there even was a poll in which 80% preferred the old site) ? I bet they did, but as I've said before, they just expect us to accept it or get used to it.

Some things are nice but for the most part the site, especially the forums are a disaster. The posting history is a mess, you have no idea in what topics you've posted on the forum or what topics have been replied to. Not to mention the site is still so fucking slow.

I guess we'll be in beta forever.

Nope. Kind of amusing to watch it crash and burn though. People didn't like the change, but Gamespot went ahead with it anyway. They're paying for it.

I want to see GS crash and burn due to the arrogance that they have shown and still show with the move to changeover without everything being right when the changeover took place. I have been a member of GS for quite some time and still like posting in the forums and reading reviews occasionally (for games I am possibly interested in), but with a site that isn't usable in it's current form, the statement that GS wanted to change so they could attract new users is a huge failure and crashing and burning will show them that they really screwed up by taking a site live when it wasn't ready for prime time.

Hey Ali, aren't most people in Gaza (social) conservatives? Then how did you move away from that mindset?

The problem is, I really can't tell you that most people in Gaza are socially conservative, and I can't tell you the opposite either. They're all over the spectrum of social ideology. So let's settle with that they're not really as conservative as many westerners would think. But again they are conservative yes. Its like they cling to certain archaic social norms and customs and they just wouldn't move pass them. Sometimes it looks like as if the society here has lost its identity in its attempt to survive harsh conditions, constant conflict and difficulties, and a rapidly changing world that it gasps trying to keep up with it and be a relevant part of it.

But I'm looked at as a liberal here, even extremely liberal at times. Needless to say, it has gotten me into troubles in several occasions. But I think of myself as a moderate, or a moderate liberal at best. In the west though, I'm sure I'd be considered more of a moderate social conservative. The way I see it is that the world is willingly moving towards liberalism more and more and there's absolutely no point in trying to coerce people into being conservatives. Its specially impractical and unproductive in today's world and its technological and intellectual advancements. If you persecute people to stop them from having sex before marriage, they'll go watch porn instead and they will find a way to have sex one way or the other. Coercion is futile. It does nothing but exacerbates problems and leads to an imminent fallout that only spreads chaos and misery. A social ideology must originate in and be adopted by a society willingly and with an unaltered freedom of choice. It has to come to a society naturally. If it doesn't, then an artificial adoption of it by violence and persecution will create the worst people and the worst social order. People become unable to inhabit their true forms and they become alienated from themselves and from each other. This alienation goes to affect all aspects of life. With time, these adversary effects only become worse and worse until society is no more and its people are shells of their former or potential selves.

With that said, I belong to the left definitely, majorly because the right proved how horrible and destructive it is. The left will never force you to have sex, but the right will force you not to do so. The left won't tell a woman to take her scarf off, but the right will force her to wear one. The left will not attempt to alienate any member of society, but the right equally alienate all members of society, whether they belong to the right or the left. It alienates its opposition by persecution and violence that are aimed to prevent them from inhabiting the form they chose for themselves. And it alienates its adherents by indoctrinating them with blind allegiance and unquestionable loyalty, making them docile and brain dead. The right will sacrifice and compromise everything in its pursuit to establish and realize its ideology. If given the choice between the destruction of the state and annihilation of its society for the realization of its social and political order, the right will always have no problem saying yes to this. That decision may be made consciously, and if not, the rationale would be that the well being of the state and its people only lies in conservatism. It cannot be without it. With such ignoramus, shallow and extremely narrow mindset, the right justifies anything and everything.

Hope this somehow made sense to you. I want to move to Europe, even though its too liberal when compared to my own social views. But I know there I'll have the chance to be whoever I want to be, and I sure as hell will let everybody else be whoever they want to be.

heh, I like how they specifically define spam as "Topics that consist of random 'thoughts of the day', immature or inane content and purpose" when trying to start a new topic.

A small part of me would be relieved if the site change led to a reduction in users. But mostly it's just disappointing to see what has happened to the site.

The issues lie with things like

  1. killing certain boards that had decent activity
  2. Killing Unions
  3. Fusing features together with less features than each had individually.
  4. Ordering by genre and date is not impossible.
  5. You cannot go to older console or computer lists manually anymore.
  6. Everything takes forever to find.
  7. The layout requires you to refersh a page to post again.
  8. The layout make it so you can't edit polls.
  9. You can't use tags as a substitute for buttons for pictures and videos at the time (80%) the site is in some nervous breakdown.
  10. If you make a long post and post links the page will autoscroll up if you type or paste at a certain point. Then you have to scroll down.
  11. You are hitting new users hard with a 5 day post limit that is actually worse than the lvl. 10 sw limit (because it only hurt SW.) but you could still post.
  12. The review system is missing features.
  13. A big killer is that collections are now insane, worthless, will take more time for reasons 4 and 5. Sharing games is crap as result.

and more and more and more.

Personally I like the new site. The old one was great and I spent a lot of time on it, but the new site is starting to move faster for me compared to when it first launched and I really appreciate the direction that the site is going. This is huge site so if the old community is too mad to stick around I'm sure another generation of Gamespot users are going to come along and fill the gaps.

One thing you haven't factored into the "old guard" leaving. They will spread the word that the new GS is not worth visiting due to it's lack of features, not well thought out features over what was available previously, and the fact that for some people, it does not work. Do you think once that kind of word gets out that people will still want to visit?

i have been visiting another forum, it has several off topic forums in it. There is one that is so busy that threads drop of the page so fast, if you want to catch up on a days worth of posts from where you left off, you have to go about 30 pages deep into the forum. It has markers showing which threads you posted in and clicking the thread title, takes you to the first new post and actually labels all the posts as NEW unlike here. You can tag threads there too.

It works so much better than here, the difference is night and day.

My account for another site got approved recently, so I am posting there now. I will continue coming to GameSpot forums because it is not all bad here, but my site activity has been divided. There are many posters, many topics, and plenty of activity. Plus that site works great every time I go to it.

I haven't been here awhile so I wasn't aware. It would be sad to see it go. Many, many debates and opinions shared from some of the older users from years ago had given me insight and new perspectives that had played a large role which led me to the individual that I am today.

I've been around on gamespot since... I think 2007/8ish. I certainly come here alot less often than I used to since the site has changed and what the changes have been; from my perspective are more destructive. For example missing sigs, animated gifs.. sure some people abused them but that is far less of a worry than now which seems to be a faceless community. People were the people you recognised by their sig. Sure you can have an avatar but its just not the same.

It seems more awkward to navigate and things just are not in the places you might think they should be.

Maybe its old habbits but its not an improvement to the site what has been done; atleast in my opinion.

I'm not glad. I used to come here quite often though I lurked more than I posted but it was fun. Now this place just doesn't feel as alive anymore...

It's a shame really. I wish GS would go back to its old design but I know that will never happen. I've tried to get used to this new look and it's not that bad but it'll never have that same feel GS used to have imo. But change was bound to happen at some point...

Nah. People here were genuinely interesting and made posting here fun and it sucks

I also get most of my news here, if i missed anything on my twitter. SW used to have the quickest scoop on gaming news imo. It sucks that it's slowing down

We should go to lai's corner where we can use tags

i have been visiting another forum, it has several off topic forums in it.

It works so much better than here, the difference is night and day.

what site?

IGN

Funny thing is I came to these forums to get away from IGN's boards cause every time i would make a post i always got about 2-3 dam trolls a post. Sometimes I would post and get one to none responses just a bunch of dam views.

Yes in some sense I'm glad that this forum is dying.

There was too much discrimination in the old forum and most of my posts were ignored by the posters here.

Also a poster here called me ugly (I think his username was DabsTight703) when I said that black women have better personalities and are less shallow than white women.
