Said like a true conservative. If we can't have it our way, let it all burn to the ground.
Hey Ali, aren't most people in Gaza (social) conservatives? Then how did you move away from that mindset?
The problem is, I really can't tell you that most people in Gaza are socially conservative, and I can't tell you the opposite either. They're all over the spectrum of social ideology. So let's settle with that they're not really as conservative as many westerners would think. But again they are conservative yes. Its like they cling to certain archaic social norms and customs and they just wouldn't move pass them. Sometimes it looks like as if the society here has lost its identity in its attempt to survive harsh conditions, constant conflict and difficulties, and a rapidly changing world that it gasps trying to keep up with it and be a relevant part of it.
But I'm looked at as a liberal here, even extremely liberal at times. Needless to say, it has gotten me into troubles in several occasions. But I think of myself as a moderate, or a moderate liberal at best. In the west though, I'm sure I'd be considered more of a moderate social conservative. The way I see it is that the world is willingly moving towards liberalism more and more and there's absolutely no point in trying to coerce people into being conservatives. Its specially impractical and unproductive in today's world and its technological and intellectual advancements. If you persecute people to stop them from having sex before marriage, they'll go watch porn instead and they will find a way to have sex one way or the other. Coercion is futile. It does nothing but exacerbates problems and leads to an imminent fallout that only spreads chaos and misery. A social ideology must originate in and be adopted by a society willingly and with an unaltered freedom of choice. It has to come to a society naturally. If it doesn't, then an artificial adoption of it by violence and persecution will create the worst people and the worst social order. People become unable to inhabit their true forms and they become alienated from themselves and from each other. This alienation goes to affect all aspects of life. With time, these adversary effects only become worse and worse until society is no more and its people are shells of their former or potential selves.
With that said, I belong to the left definitely, majorly because the right proved how horrible and destructive it is. The left will never force you to have sex, but the right will force you not to do so. The left won't tell a woman to take her scarf off, but the right will force her to wear one. The left will not attempt to alienate any member of society, but the right equally alienate all members of society, whether they belong to the right or the left. It alienates its opposition by persecution and violence that are aimed to prevent them from inhabiting the form they chose for themselves. And it alienates its adherents by indoctrinating them with blind allegiance and unquestionable loyalty, making them docile and brain dead. The right will sacrifice and compromise everything in its pursuit to establish and realize its ideology. If given the choice between the destruction of the state and annihilation of its society for the realization of its social and political order, the right will always have no problem saying yes to this. That decision may be made consciously, and if not, the rationale would be that the well being of the state and its people only lies in conservatism. It cannot be without it. With such ignoramus, shallow and extremely narrow mindset, the right justifies anything and everything.
Hope this somehow made sense to you. I want to move to Europe, even though its too liberal when compared to my own social views. But I know there I'll have the chance to be whoever I want to be, and I sure as hell will let everybody else be whoever they want to be.
