Yeah, it's America speak English but a LARGE portion of America speaks Spanish as well. Are you even trying to learn the language of the people who do a great deal of work here? especially those of you who live in California.

I've taken 4 years of Spanish so I know how to communicate pretty well.

chucholucho

What videogame consoles do you have, and which videogame is your favorite?

...

I took 2 years of Spanish in highschool, so I could communicate basics to someone. If I see a Spanish phrase written out, like above, I can understand it, but if someone were to speak that to me, they'd have to speak mas despacio que normal.

If the country has one official language, in this case English, you should not be expected to learn a language that's spoken by the minority. If they speak English, don't expect people to speak Spanish. And if they can't speak English, learn it FFS!

That kind of attitute is exactly what makes hispanic people 'dislike' most americans, not my case though, I really don't care :] I'm studying japanese and italian xD, and obviously I know spanish and english..

It was only a weak attempt at humor, that's not really my "attitude". Truth be told, I had four semesters of Spanish in college. I remember a bit of it, not enough to be conversational, but I can understand a little.

No, I took French. And besides, if you're going to flee a life that sucks, you need to make some sacrifices. You just can't come over here and expect Utopia without work. Hell, at least learn numbers and words used at your job!

But isnt it kind of useful to know how to speak the second largest language in your country? Just like all European countries teach their students English, not because the majority in their country speak it, but because it's useful.

I tried, couldn't do it, so I took Sign Language as my foreign language to finish college. Thank god too, because I didn't want to have to take Spanish. Latin is just as beneficial because it helped me to learn plenty of root words.

That says "national language"; you said "official language". There is a difference. English is the de facto language, but is not official.

My school only teaches French, German and Welsh, so no Spanish learning for me. Not that I'd really need Spanish that much here. That and I don't really have the dedication to learn a new language, I'm only doing reasonably well in German because there's a GCSE in it for me which could be useful.

I have no problem with people speaking or learning other languages, but i have to say, the title of the thread is pretty arrogant. To suggest that it is our responsiblity to learn spanish is crazy.I have absolutely no repsonsibilty to learn it, they have come to the US, where the de facto language is english.

You should ask the people in the US who can't speak english this question...not the other way around.
