I recently watched Firefly on Netflix because my brother recommended it and it was a supposed cult hit. After watching it, I thought it was a just 6/10 at best... but then I watched the movie and realized that Joss Whedon had a bigger and better plan for the short lived series. I wish there was more. :(

Another single season series I enjoyed was Band of Brothers even though I never finished it. I need to finish that series...

so what about you OT, are there any single season television series you enjoyed that you would like to shed light on? where can we easily find and watch it?

Do you think the series was best told in one season or do you think there was potential for more and better episodes had the show lived on?

True Detective came out recently and was just fantastic, they're not sure if they are going to do a new season. You'll need HBO to watch it but it's seriously some of the best TV I've seen in my whole life.

I also really liked that USA show The 4400, it's on Netflix now.

Firefly, My So-called Life, Freaks and Geeks and a Starz show called Gravity come to mind.

Clone High.

Such a funny dark Comedy. Sad it was cancelled.

Craziest premise for a show ever, but it's really funny. Probably had the biggest cliffhanger ending I've ever seen. It also had some of the best music I've ever heard on a TV show.

9/10

Terra Nova.

i really liked the show. even though there was a big plot whole, basically making what they were doing mean nothing at all.

i still enjoyed it. then they leave a nice big cliffhanger after season 1. Then we get a big, **** You, the show is cancelled!

-

not a one season show, but i really liked Breakout Kings. they also left us with a big cliffhanger.

Never heard of any of the tv shows mentioned so far, great. I like shows that are easy to finish. Trying to watch a bunch of the good ones before diving into longer and more established ones like Madmen, Orange is the New Black, or HIMYM.

I also need to watch House of Cards.

This! Such a un-appreciated show. Probably because it was actually good programming on MTV....

As for the topic, it already is renewed for a new season, but I just have to mention how amazing Rick an Morty's 1st season has been. If the show didn't get renewed, this would easily go down as a huge cult classic IMO. Been the most amazingly funny 1st season I have ever seen in a TV show!

Awake

It had a lot of potential in my opinion. Since it was canceled the creator attempted to give some closure in the finale , but was also left open ended. I really recommend it.

My Own Worst Enemy

The promos for this made it look terrible, but I gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised. It's only 9 episodes, so it's not much of a commitment, but don't expect an ending since it was canceled.

I think the only one-season show I've ever watched was NYC22. And yeah, it was a stereotypical summer cop show, but I liked the characters. They were a bit more diverse than the typical white lead male, brawny black guy, smart girl or sassy girl, black lab tech woman etc.

I can think of a few shows that ended in their second season I'd like to have seen more of, but not the first.

However, I can probably think of a few shows that should have focused on only being single season series that ran their idea into the ground by trying to milk it. Prison Break and Revenge both come to mind.

Anyhow, those HBO shows, like The Pacific, Band of Brothers, Generation Kill, those are miniseries and aren't designed for continuing run.

Yeah, a lot of Japanese ones.
I like their format, their tv shows usually run for only 1 season (equals 11 episodes).
It's a lot easier to digest, 11 episodes and the story is finished.

They're going to do another season but it will be with an entirely new cast/plot.

I really liked Go On cause it seemed like a lighter replacement for Community but NBC cancelled it.

And I love Gravity Falls and Orphan Black but their second seasons are coming soon.

There is a difference between a mini-series and a regular series that ended after only one season. Usually the latter is due to low ratings. Band of Brothers was a mini-series with huge ratings, but only ever intended to have 10 parts.

You clearly have no sense of characterization if you think Firefly is a "6/10 at best". All the characters grow more in those 14 episodes than characters in shows with 10 seasons of 25 episodes. It's a show about the characters and their journey, not sci fi or anything else.

It's one of my favourite shows and I only watched it in it's entirety (including Serenity) a couple months ago.

That said, I think it's time to change my avatar back. Nova grows boring.

Yeah Firefly is the only one I wish was never cancelled.

Any others I probably watched were not really worth another series.

Freaks and Geeks.

Firefly's one of the most overrated, post-cancellation shows ever.

That's a baseless assumption. Characterization isn't the only element needed to make good television. I agree that that character development helped out FireFly, but it was also lackluster, slow paced, and cheesy at times. I still wouldn't give it more than a 6/10 even if the scale was on characterization alone; I hardly cared about most of the main characters until I watched the movie.

I'm sad it wasn't good enough of a show to stay on television.
