I am an American citizen, but live in Canada. I never plan on going back due to the country being fundementalist/ignorent in culture and government. For example death panels, birthirs and the rediculous "Obama is muslim" statements. Plus the government being controlled by the industry.

When acquaintances and even friends here in the U.S. hear of my interest in Iran and Iranian culture I invariably get a response similar to the following examples, usually accompanied by either a glazed over look or a sudden scrutinizing glance that as good as says "so just when did you get here from Mars?"

Some people get an intrigued look on their face, followed by a dawn of recognition. "Oh," they exclaim, "I saw a documentary a while back about some nomads somewhere on the border with Israel--it was really interesting seeing their camels and stuff." Or "Yeah, I heard some Indian music at the mall the other day. Doesn't Iran border India or something?" And of course, "Arabic's a difficult language, isn't it? By the way, I've always wondered, why do they all wear those red checkered things in Iran?"

And those are usually the best responses. It's very depressing, especially when it hits you that a good many people here in the U.S. don't have the faintest idea where and what Iran is, let alone Iraq. (Though of course it's very convenient not to know too much about a place your country is intent on destroying anyway--it saves one from having to worry about unsettling thoughts like whether those hundreds of little bodies turning up in morgues and hospitals in Iraq might have been children just like the ones we see every day here in America.)

Frequently, any mention of interest in Iran's culture is enough to stop a conversation short, with a long awkward pause and a sudden lack of enthusiasm on the other participant's part. It's like I've just mentioned how much I enjoy scrutinizing public toilets as a hobby or spoken of a great liking for reading heavy geometry tomes as poolside relaxation. They stare at me for a moment and look around for a convenient escape, or quickly ask my opinion on the latest movie.

But far worse are the angry and vehement comments I receive more and more often these days. "We should have turned Iran into a glass parking lot long ago when they first gave us trouble," they declare (conveniently ignoring the fact that the U.S. destroyed Iran's democracy in 1953 and set in cycle the events of the past fifty years with their coup and installation of the ruthless and iron-fisted shah.) "What are we waiting for," they demand, "why not just drop a couple of nukes and send Iran back to the dark ages?"

And my blood boils inside, destroying my attempts to keep a calm exterior. The callousness and utter lack of humanity of that statement never ceases to shock me anew every time I hear it. How can people care so little that they would like to see millions of innocent people nuked to death--mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, babies, teenagers? Apparently not even that much occurs to them, let alone the fact that the U.S. has absolutely ZERO right to interfere with governments all the world when they have not attacked us.

And now I ask, why do Americans have so little interest in other cultures, in others' ways of life? They have the means to be the most educated people on earth, and yet time and again they display their wanton ignorance and prejudice before the world. Really, what would it take in a country so diverse with so many cultures and people from almost every place on the globe, to simply take the time to learn about a way of life outside of the typical white American way? And don't we have a responsibility as human beings to at least learn about the Iranian people and their way of life before we step in to destroy their country with bombs?

I'm not anti-American, before someone slams that label on me for my honest questions and criticsms. I merely wish to illuminate and hopefully help to change an aspect of American culture I find sickening and tragic. If people here took the time to learn about other cultures and peoples and even learn another language besides English, perhaps they would develop a more understanding and compassionate (and hopefully less condescending!) view of the world.

America is (unfortunately) a nation of people who call themselves either individualists or the religious right (collectivists). Both voting blocks are large supporters of the Republican Party, and are highly infuential in national politics. I don't think that Libertarians are individualists, though. They go on the internet and engage in groupthink, reinforcing each other's lopsided ideas of what is good for the world. They're rapidly becoming collectivists without knowing it, and the Right is just going to keep on gaining prestige with the American people. Things are looking bad right now. :(

Europe is showing signs of an individualist resurgence, but it's to a much smaller extent than in the U.S. Western Europe is pretty much the best part of the world to be in right now, IMO.

I don't want to learn about things I will never experience or have no natural interest in. It's the same reason I'm not studying Latin or learning how to tapdance. I agree that people should be more informed about the causes they supposedly support, but you can see that problem everywhere. The reason you see so much of it in America is because you are either looking for it or you are surrounded by things that repeat that ideology to you, such as US tv and news. Perhaps instead of high horsing the argument, you should resolve your problems with it. Either become a politician or newscaster, accept it and move on, or move to Iran and see if you like it better.

mabey shoulda blogged it....some of your statements only represent a fraction of U.S. beliefs, they are yours and not of the country as a whole...they are certainly not my beliefs, but american isolationism is the the answer either...we have many interest in the world and securing peace with other countries is necessary for american survival whether you agree with the tactics or not...thats why love us or hate us we are the first country people look to for help economically or militarily

I agree, americans need to be less close minded when it comes to things like these. According to them socialist actions, muslims and the middle east are bad without actually know anything about the above. I bet most of them don't know canada uses socialist practices as well as alot of europe.

character!...what you are implying america is without...one thing you may have learned while you were in mississippi is we have character and pride...and wont shy away from a discussion ora fight...we take patriotism seriously. look at our state flag...we have deep roots and dont change for anyone...i have pride in my state and country...do you?

you don't change for anything? That is your biggest problem. Patriotism is one of the worst ideas. Why not have pride in humanity first. How can you be a patriot when your govornment does such wrong things, unobtrusively, such as stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a newly independent country (East Timor) and giving it to big corporations or to the rich, when public schools and public hospitals receive little funding, and you are a recipient of their services and depend on their services for survival?

I agree, americans need to be less close minded when it comes to things like these. According to them socialist actions, muslims and the middle east are bad without actually know anything about the above. I bet most of them don't know canada uses socialist practices as well as alot of europe.

I thought I made it clear in my second statement to you I was basing my statement off my experience?

Your experiance doesn't qualify you to generalize Americans as a group as anything. you said yourself your experiences where very limited in scope.

and whats the point of that? they still have the best millitary in the world, your statements are misleading.

That could be argued, size can beat quality you know. How are my statements misleading?

because for example the chinese have 5 million fighters(example) inferior weapons outdated planes etc...what good is that...equals a slaughter for the US...personal size doesnt matter....and secondly we are all volunteer...cant beat that

How old are you? Considering I own several AK assualt rifles I have never had one jam on me or the receiver explode. One could argue about the JTF vs FA18. The M16 is a disgrace. Personally German weapons FTW.

And so is yours. So who is to say I am wrong? Your media doesn't help very much with that image either.

From my experiences with americans I'm not generalizing at all.

Espada12

So you have met every American there is? I have lived here for 5 years and found that americans like that are hardly the majority

Where in my post did I say I met every american there is? From my stays in america they are the majority. It could be because I stayed in that awful state known as new york.

It's pretty sad that I called it. :? I live in California. :P

My media? I have not generalized at all, America is far to diverse for me to do that, I never said that all americans where ignorant nor did I say they where all intelligent. This is fact.

older than you 30...i work for the system(healthcare) i know we have problems...your points of akvs.m16 f18's vs migs fall short on substance...no matter what i say you contiue to believe your views and likewise for me....i agree to disagree...although i can see from your original post why you say you wont return to the US...your views are very radical and anti american...even when you say you are not anti american...everything you argue is how america is bad...do you have anything good to say about your homeland?

WTF are you talking about? are you honestly arguing that America does not have the best military in the world? America spends more on it's military then the rest of the world combined.
