I got in a small argument with a classmate regarding the following question:

Do you think you can be friends with a girl whom you have feelings for and you know that she doesn't have them back for you? (of course this applies vice versa, so girls feel free to give your opinion)

I admitted that it would be a difficult situation but that it is possible. What do you think?

It's most assuredly possible. I've been in that situation before, and it works out just fine, providing that you understand and accept the situation for what it is. And don't assume that what is true in the present will be true in the future. My second relationship was with a girl who disliked me a great deal when she met me, came to enjoy my company in a non-romantic way when she got to know me better, then developed an attraction for me. It was just a matter of time.

It's more than possible: it's true. It happens all the time. I'd say it's a good thing but only if the person who's doing the crushing knows and accepts that the other person will not be the, erm, peanut butter to their jelly.

yeah, it's possible. It's happening to me right now.. cause i used to have really strong feelings about this girl, but she never felt anything back, and now me and her are bestfriends, and i still have a little bit of a thing for her, even though she thinks that i completely dont, so she talks to me about other guys all the time, and really we're nothing more than bestfriends, and i dont think we ever will be

It really depends on the situation. If I have a friend and then as time progresses I begin to like her more, then yeah i might be her friend till i make my move. But if i see a girl and I'm attracted to her, I do everything in my power to ensure that we never become friends. I would rather that she hate me, than that we be friends. Atleast you can recover from hate, but its harder, bordering on impossible, to get out of the friendzone.

To be quite honest most of my female friends I have had feelings for, as in I wanted to sex them up.

But, we remain friends. Its all about respect, distance, and not ruining something that is already perfectly acceptable.

And if they break up with their boyfriend, well, I am there in their time of need *schwing!*

Easily, as long as you can come to terms with the fact that she doesn't share the feelings for you. I am still friends with my first love... I even still love her and care about her, I just don't have the same romantic feelings as I did prior to us recently coming to an agreement about a romantic relationship between us being unable to work.

It is possible. However, depending on the situation - if she's never going to like you the same way - it can be easier to simply distance yourself from her.

Of course you can, I just wouldn't keep saying how I felt for her every time I talked to her.

Been there. Done that. Quite possible.

That's not to say it won't be quite an emotional hardship, at times. But possible? Hecks yes.

I guess it's possible, although you'd just be making yourself miserable in the process as it's incredible hard to distance yourself from someone you communicate with all the time.

Doesn't this happen to most people at least once at some point?

Bio_Spark

yes, but so long as you expect it there is no shame (well, maybe a bit of shame, but some drunken friend-to-friend bonding will patch that up) in trying. And who knows, one days one of your friends-that-is-female just might say yes.

Or, in my case, my friend helps me hook up with chicks! I have a female wingman, and it helps lol

Of course. It's happened to me, as long as you realize you can't let those feelings get a hold of you, then you'll be fine.

(taking into consideration that your girlfriend at the same time yoU're friend)

It is possible for a while...when you tell her you like/love(maybe after a long time you )her everything changes. Either your friendship ends/gets bad or you get even closer which leads to an official relation.

But for your health just doN't try to be that patient and get along as friends with the girl. That really really sucks....Experience speaking here, I had that for 3 years, told her that I loved her. We got closer(YES CLOSER :) ) but still no official relation. And now she is with another one. And she lied to me about that...so she's finished for me.

As you can see that leads to bad things.

I was in the exact SAME situation. But maybe the difference was that I really liked her like no other girl before. We had also become best friends meaning she even used to share things like "oh I got a crush on that guy he looks so cute".Those things made me very jealous and feel worthless.I couldnt continue that way and am just good friends with her and not very close anymore.

She remained single all that time and I realised when she isnt then being her best friend would really be very cruel so it was best for me to go aloof.
