Since many people will have different views of what "life changing" means, let me explain...This could be an album that opened you up to a certain genre, or simply something where you remember the first time you heard it and fell in love, it doesn't really matter. Just give the album (pictures help, too) and a brief description...Or not for you extra terse types ;) Also, feel free to do more than 3, that's just how many I chose

In no particular order...

Minor Threat

Minor Threat - self-titled/discography

Not really an album, per se, but whatever...The first time I heard this I was probably 12-13 years old and it was by far the hardest, angriest thing I had ever heard and I instantly fell in love. For the next 6 years or so I was straight edge, not necessarily due to Minor Threat, but definitely in conjunction with them. This is the band that opened me up to the entire hardcore scene and is still so potent and meaningful 20+ years after its release.

88 Fingers Louie

88 Fingers Louie - Behind Bars

One of the first punk albums (and CDs) I ever bought. I still remember the first time I listened to them, and the first time I saw them live. Growing up in Chicago and listening to punk it's impossible not to know and love these guys. Their songs are brutally honest and a strange mix of melodic hardcore. For fans of Rise Against, this is the band Joe and Dan (original guitarist) were in before Rise Against existed. I've listened to this CD so much that it's practically destroyed, I need a new copy.

Johnny Cash

A stiff departure from what I mainly listened to at the time, Johnny Cash is possibly the single greatest musician of our time...A controversial statement, I know. This album runs the gamut of his song catalog, but the important thing about it is the banter between songs. Cash loved what he did, and he did it so well. Truly groundbreaking idea and album in general.

Okay...Your turn!

It wasn't an album, but a song. My then love interest had told me to listen to it one day, and the next day we had a really big fight and I heard it on the radio... Needless to say if you've been paying attention to my depressive posts that relationship didn't work out anyway, but I'd never felt more in love with someone then when that song played. It was like in the movies, how the guy hears it and runs rushing to the girl to tell her he loves her and never wants to be without her ever again... Only, it wasn't like that at all. Haha. :P

The song was Open Your Eyes by Snow Patrol.

Hmm.....I guess since Disintegration is my favorite album by The Cure...and from that I got into said band....which got me into similar music...which got me into genres I'd never listened to before....that gets the vote.

And since you posted pictures....enjoy.

Too bad she didn't quite feel as strongly as I did. >.>

It's a nice song though. I also love Chasing Cars. I haven't listened to any of their other stuff and I don't think I'll bother.

Edit: As for songs that influenced my music style: it'd have to be some songs I randomly found one time. They were techno/trance remixes of some songs from Titanic, of all things, but I simply fell in love with the genres. Now techno and trance is pretty much all I listen to.

The Verve - Storm in Heaven

Complete spacy shoegazer bliss. The first time I heard this, my musical tastes were forever changed.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Took me completely by surprise in 2001 when I first heard it. Now I've seen Interpol live more times than any other band (7 if I remember correctly).

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

My all-time favorite album. Shoegazing at its absolute peak. Influenced my photography, strangely enough (see blog for some examples).

from off the album amnesiac by radiohead. i have seen the video. in the video it has an animated thom yorke swirling around in darkness throughout from memory. in the song which is unusual, there is background noise which sounds like people talking in a public place or what i gather to be a dinner party. on that version there are b-sides which i enjoyed too. including a more rockier track which sounds reckless and out of tune even for thom yorke after considering their earlier albums which are rock and more sombre. i am also listening to sail to the moon from off the hail to the thief album.

fitting. i used to listen to this album in prison. i do not think it changed my life but gave me comfort during the difficult times in there. their best from the discography of interpol hands down.

rare release. digitally re-mastered instrumental tracks from like the cover says... 1977-1999. crystal japan is a favourite.

my first music cds in 1999. eminem was debuting at the time when this group took a lengthy hiatus.

the above four did not transform my life. but if anything could be said. is that from bottom to top they were being listened to after purchase at meaningful times of my life and at turning points of the world we live in. i am twenty four.

Gustav Holst´s The Planets Op. 32

link to Venus; the bringer of peace(new frame)

My first lucid memory of listening to music is linked to this album, especially "Mars" stands out vividly to me in recollection, despite me being of a very young age when first introduced to it.

My mom pretty much bottled me up on this album, mainly because it had a calming effect on me, and as soon as i could speak my mind, i wanted my own copy of this album. (: This stuff changed me in ways undetermined and the aftermath extents indefinitely. It is probably the sole catalyst for me actively seeking out cla$$ical compositions to this day.

Splashdown's Blueshift. It wasn't even technically released, but it was leaked on the internet. It was a complete revelation for my Offspring-listening 13 y/o self. Blueshift got me into trip-hop, goth rock, electronica, pretty much everything else.

I stepped way out of my comfort zone when I bought this album, and it paid off. Sonic Youth is now my favorite band ever.

I actually got into Morrissey before I got into the Smiths. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the lyrics before Moz and the Smiths, but how couldn't I after hearing those heart-on-sleeve songs? Incredible album, best debut of all time.

I think if you weren't thinking so hard about it you would realize what they are. There has to be at least one defining album or song or artist that got you into music or at least challenged what you believed music could be.

There are several artists/lyrics that really appeal to me/sum of my thoughts better than I ever could...my writing skills be lacking But there are not really any that changed me/my tastes...hmmm...maybe more like a collection of artists that drew me towards new genres (goes off to ignore work on desk and consider this issue)

This is the first album I received. I think. Either this one or another one. It didn't change my life, but it did get me into popular music. I knew all 13 songs of this particular album... I was in 4th grade when my parents bought it for me. Ahh, how I used to keep up with the popular artists... now I can't even tell you 5 of them right now, as my interest in popular music is fading. :P

The best answer I have you (original ?) would be all the TX Country artists and all the Metal artists that first got me into their respective genres -for the first time, I was actually into two totally disparate things...good life lesson

What's the difference between the two Korn albums?

what do you mean? they are two different albums.. Issues is just insane.. the entire band were soo low while making that album. if id have to describe it with one word, that word would be "pain". plain and simple. its such an unique and amazing album.. everyone should have listened through it at least once. Untouchables is newer and with higher production values. its got some amazing songs for people who want hope. my favourite song from it is probably "Alone I Break". you really should check them out if you havent already!

I know they are different albums, I was just wondering how two albums from the same band could affect you in different ways. I'm not really much of a fan of anything I've heard of theirs, but thanks for the recommendation :)

Those are all I can think off, atm.

Shinedown - Leave A Whisper, started with Sound Of Madness, though, and that one was a good album, too.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

Mudvayne - L.D. 50

Ride The Lighting - Metallica

Slipknot (self-titled album)
