A crazy thundersotrm hit toronto ontario and the GTA area yesterday afternoon. This thunderstorm dropped over 100+ milimeters of rain in some parts of the GTA area in a couple of hours. Some areas got hit with over 50+ milimeters of rain in a couple of hours.

Thie rain that fell yesterday broke monthly/daily records for rainfall in parts of the GTA.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2013/07/08/toronto-weather-heavy-rain.html

I hope everyone is safe in that area and that no one is killed by this flooding.

Last night was fvcking nuts. The area I live in was hit pretty bad but nowhere near as bad as downtown was. Still, I've never seen rainfall like this before in my 21 years of living and was sort of surreal. Here are some pictures:

Parts of NY were similarly hit last week. Perhaps the influx of tropical moisture from the south is providing added punch.

Similar stuff happens a lot back when I was in Arizona during monsoon season.

Actually, I don't live in Quebec. I'm just surprised no body made a topic about it, since it's quite a big story.

100 mm of rain is almost 4 inches. Rain measurement at weather stations are measured in a rain gauge. They're not measured on the ground. We have warnings for 2 inches or more of rain falling within an hour because that would be enough for flash flooding and otherwise causing havoc on roads. With those kinds of rainfall, your wiper blades wouldn't be able to keep up with the rain.

Typical rain gauge:

MM throw me off as well. 100 MM is about 4 inches. Which doesnt sound like much but can cause coastlines and river banks to overflow. The TC also throw me off with the acronym GTA which I keep reading as Grand Theft Auto.

I feel for those in Canada.

Living in Houston, we see weather like this all the time, but that never makes it any easier to deal with. Hopefully, people had flood insurance.

Yeah, it's the moisture that caused the rain down here in Georgia from Tuesday the 2nd to Sunday the 7th. We are finally out of the flood warnings that started at 8AM Tuesday last week. We probably had a good foot of rain over the last week in most areas and had flooding too. The sad thing is that some of it is preventable and other flooding is totally preventable.

In the midwest US it's been raining like crazy. Feels like Seattle. Last month i think my area got almost 50% more rain than average and in just the first week this month we are almost what we average for the whole month. This summer has not felt much like a summer at all with all the monsoons hitting.

Atlanta has had more rain so far the first 6 months this year than we have had all of last year. June even set a record of over 9.5 inches. That does not even take into account what we had last week.

I think the average is almost 4in for the month and i know we are at that now. So we could end up with 10-12in if it keeps going. I really want to go swimming, but it hasn't warmed up enough (for me) and the constant rain isnt helping.

100mm is not that hard either. We learned in elementary that distance in the metric system work with multiples of 10:

1 meter = 10 decimeter = 100 centimeter = 1000 millimeter. 1 kilometer = 1000 meter.

I learned early on that 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. From there, it's not hard to do the math.

I can't quite do all the multiplication or division in my head when converting between metric and English system. But, I can scribble them on a piece of paper and figure it out.

It is when they fall within the span of two hours. Two inches is the maximum amount the rain gauge will hold without using the overflow container. The only places where I've personally seen a rain gauge fill up to max within a few hours are in tropical countries like Colombia.
