I made this video highlighting how simple the gameplay is. You can't move the character. Just tap. Keep tapping. Maybe swipe here and there, and tap some more.
I see no reason why developers can't implement virtual controls and have a directional pad on the bottom left and 4 buttons on the bottom right, even though it would get a bit tight in terms of screen space.
But, either way you're going to be tapping the screen anyway and possibly tapping over the character, so it should not matter too much if the hypothetical buttons overlap with the characters.
