The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN.

Followinginitial reportsfrom tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August.Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Sounds great to me except for the launch date. I was really hoping it would launch by the end of this year.

Sounds about right. Processor tech has come a long way since the 360 launched. Just about anything these days would be a huge leap over what consoles are currently equipped with. Hopefully the hardware won't make the end product too pricey, though.

Gotta keep in mind that Microsoft has to keep the hardware reasonably cheap. After all, if they were to outfit their next console with the latest graphics cards and processors, the thing would end up costing a fortune. No one wants to spend $700 on a game console, as the PlayStation 3's early years confirmed.

The main reason PS3 cost so much was due to the $250 bluray player in each PS3. Take that out and Sony could've sold it for at least $400. If we also take out the $60 Emotion Engine (PS2) from each launch PS3, that brings the total cost of PS3 down by $310. GPUs and CPUs dont cost as much as you'd think. Especially when Sony and MS order them by bulk. I expect Sony to include an equivalent of GTX 570 (which i bought for $320 late last year, but will definitely not cost as much when Sony order millions of them) in PS4. Should be good enough with a good CPU and RAM.

The Vita has a QUAD core CPU and a GPU with 4 processors and the total component cost of both is barely $50. And this is mobile technology, even the newest iPad isn't using a Quad Core processor yet.

Display and touchscreens: $50
Battery: $3.60
Cameras: $3.50
Wi-Fi/BT/GPS: $3.50
NAND: $6.00
SDRAM: $9.25
Processor: $16.00
BB+XCR: $16.25
Non-electronic: $11.00
Other: $30.00
Supporting materials: $10.00

Agreed. Especially if it's going to be relatively weaksauce 6000. I'd wait another 2 years for a 7000, but damn, really? I was hoping for a bigger leap.

Six times more powerful than the current gen sounds impressive, but 20% more powerful than the Wii U sounds unimpressive. Guess I'll just have to wait for the unveiling to form an opinion.

It all sounds impressive really when you consider that this hardware is going to be optimised unlike pc hardware, 20% more powerful than WiiU isn't good or disappointing either because we haven't seen what it can do yet... stop speculating and wait and see :P.

If true, that's good news for future Wii U owners. For once, I don't want to see Nintendo be TOO behind in terms of hardware. I'd actually like to own a Nintendo console this time and keep it - like I did with the NES, SNES, N64 days.

I have no doubt that Microsoft will engineer a fantastic machine that is both user and developer friendly; it's their strategy that I believe will be cancerous.

Regardless, I will not be buying the next Xbox.

Cost is only one factor in the console equation. Sony is not going to have an equivalent GTX 570 because of heat and power restrictions.

It's so hard to say one piece of hardware is 7 times more powerful than another, especially in terms of something like a console. Things are a lot more complex than the good old days of 8bit, 16bit, 32bit etc, but even this was a simplification of the real power gains.

considering the state of the economy and how good games look already, bigger won't necessarily be better next time around. nintendo showed that this gen with the wii. (although for consoles i prefer the ps3/360)

6 times!!! well, it's hard to give an opinion on this one, I don't think it's the big leap that many expected, however, I think that game designers should decide and comment whether it was enough or not.........

Was hoping for slightly above 10 times more powerful. Six is a bit lame. At least my new PC will be able to run all next gen multiplats. But I'd rather be forced to upgrade. Life is only so long and I want monster graphics before I get too old :)!

Has anyone really consider what these "6 times" or "20 times" faster really equates to or how it benefits games?

Pertty lame. Part of that power will just go to get us up to 1080p and 60fps. Not a ton of left over power for a real wow factor. Id be happe if it came out at 199$ though.

I could do that too, but I can't see far into the future on something like this, since life is ever-changing and requires different priorities. So as much as I would like a gaming system in 2014, that may not happen.

Wow a 6670 GPU? I was expecting a bigger leap considering its launching late next year. Yesterday I was happy to hear it will be based off Radeon 7000 series, but now I read that it won't even have the high end version of the 6000 series, LAME! By the time this thing is released, it will be clearly outclassed , outdated compared to PC's, by then ATI's 8000 series, even 9000 series will be on shelves. To put things on perspective, when the original xbox launched in 2001, its GPU fared better than current PC GPU's for a few months; The xbox 360 was a similar case at the time of release, it GPU chip was close to high end PC GPU in terms of performance. The Xbox 360's succesor GPU chip was/is outdated last summer and this thing is releasing in 18 months? WTF?!!!

I have to keep in mind that its using those new intergrated CPU GPU chips, which could be a good reason MS for not going too high end. What bothers me the most is that its most likely a big part of the budget going for Kinect 2. This coupled with the lack of exclusives, I'm not buying this console at this point. I think I better start saving for a new rig and decide on Wii U or PS4. Good thing I see from this console is the price, I can't see it cost more than $350.

One last thing 6x more powerful doesn't mean 6x better graphics; keep in mind those resources have to go AI, texture detail, draw distance etc... There will be a leap for sure, but to have an xbox-xbox360 type leap, I'd guess 10x at least.

I fear next gen might be lagging from the start. Current gen was practically on par with pc gaming at launch of the 360, great example was F.E.A.R which looked as great as it did on the PC. If next gen are going to use the 6000 series (not even a high end model) it will probably be a couple of GPU generations behind the PC. I expect next gen lifecycle to be much shorter than current gen

That wouldn't surprise me. I think the sluggish sales of the two core consoles go a long way towards explaining why this gen has been so long (and also explains why third parties have been dropping like flies).

Personally, I think its smart for affordability to be the key consideration. Its my belief that a lot of younger gamers haven't gotten into console gaming because their parents have gotten them either handhelds or multifunctional devices let cellphones. If core console gaming becomes a middle aged man's game, as happened to the mainstream comic book industry it will just become more and more insular and less and less interesting.

"Six times" more power doesn't necessarily mean far more expensive. Quad cores are pretty common nowadays and RAM is cheaper than it's ever been. The price of a Blu-Ray drive is far less now than at the time of the PS3 launch. The stickler is going to be the proprietary components. All the big three will have to keep things in check on that end.

Uh, it is 1GB GDDR5. That's perfectly reasonable for a console. More so if MS wasn't to keep production costs under control. I get where you're going with this in terms of where you think graphical standards will be or need to be come next year. But if MS wants to get the ball rolling on this thing, production needs to happen soon, especially if this card is some proprietary build. The R&D on next gen consoles has probably been going on for a few years now.

This is exactly what will happen. Judging by the rumours the next gen is pretty weak.

PC will already be miles ahead when it does finally release and the gap will only get bigger and bigger. I sense very big shifts in the console gaming market in the future and more people will get PCs because consoles will be trailing from the start

Judging by graphs of GPUs the 6670 is 3 times weaker than a mid-high range card if not more and that's right now. Just imagine when it launches

It can't even beat one of my 460s, 2 of them murders it with better/worse 580 performance.

[QUOTE="inoperativeRS"]Sounds like absolute sh*t but that's to be expected since they're trying to go the Nintendo way I guess.QuistisTrepe_

Is MS coming out with a tablet controller? I didn't know that.

They're pushing Kinect really hard. I'm not going to claim that it's the only reason they decided to go with a completely outdated GPU model but it's definitely relevant for understanding that decision. The 360's GPU was quite sofisticated for the time even if it wasn't a high end card on its own.

I was admittedly trolling with this. Nothing against you personally, it's more to the point of the gross overreactions and melodrama from many people on this board as of late who are under the impression that all console gaming is undergoing "Nintendification". Yes the influence is there, but to think that conventional gaming is being sacificed at the expense of motion gaming strikes me as absurd. And besides, what's wrong with exploring motion gaming even further. Kinect has it's faults, but the precision and functionality is only going to improve. MS deserves praise for going all in with this as opposed to Sony which merely half-assesed it with Move.

To outfit their console with the latest graphics cards and processors, it would definitely cost more than $700 as a game console. Way more.

Yeah, but eventually they will...and it won't cost that much.

You KNOW you want it!
