Game of Thrones TellTale Game Review: 5 Eps Down, 1 to Go

Check out this game review of Game of Thrones from Telltale Games. There is no middle ground when you play Game of Thrones. You win or you die.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ve likely heard of Game of Thrones. For you non-geeks out there, “A Game of Thrones” is the title of book one in the popular “A Song of Fire and Ice” fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin. Martin’s book series inspired the creation of the hit HBO “Game of Thrones” TV series, which, in turn, inspired the “Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series” video game.

If Telltale Games sounds familiar, that’s likely because you’ve either heard of or played the other popular games this American independent digital publisher has put out, likw “The Walking Dead” and “The Wolf Among Us”. Telltale transformed both of these comics into episodic adventure games. Finding success with both, it decided to strike gold again, and transformed HBO’s ridiculously popular “Game of Thrones” TV show into a video game, releasing it for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, OS X, Android, and iOS, back in December 2014.

This video game takes place after Season 3 of the HBO TV series, so if you haven’t watched the show up to this point, or if you haven’t read the book series, you’re going to want to stop reading this review now if you don’t like spoilers. Consider yourself warned.

Tyrion Lannister, also known as 'the Imp' supplies an intriguing presence as always.

That being said, if you’re not yet ready to play Telltale’s game, but you still want to enjoy some Game of Thrones gaming action, you might want to give Microgaming’s Game of Thrones Slot a spin. This online slot is also based on the HBO TV series and features cinematic sequences from the show, as well as an exciting Free Spins bonus round where you align with one of the four big houses battling for the throne: Lannister, Stark, Baratheon, and Targaryen.

However, for those of you who want the scoop on “Game of Thrones” by Telltale Games, here it is.

The game consists of six episodes and focuses on House Forrester, an inconsequential noble family of the North, but loyal bannermen to the House Stark of Winterfell. The Forresters have a castle at Ironrath, which is surrounded by an Ironwood tree forest. This forest is home to the strongest woods in all of Westeros. In the first episode of the game series, the Forrester family’s attempt to maintain control of this forest is essential to the plot.

The game begins during the events of the infamous Red Wedding; the bloodbath that claims the lives of two major Stark characters and results in the cruel House Bolton taking control of the North. As a member of the Forrester family it’s now up to you to decide if you will defy your new rulers and face death, or bow down and become one of their puppets.

Those who are already missing Jon Snow's character get an extra taste in this RPG.

To date, five episodes have been released: Episode 1: “Iron from Ice”, Episode 2: “The Lost Lord”, Episode 3: “The Sword in the Darkness”, Episode 4: Sons of Winter”, and Episode 5: “A Nest of Vipers”. The most recent episode was released on July 21, 2015.

Each episode propels your story forward, and how your tale ends, depends entirely on the choices you make. Just like the books and the TV show, the Game of Thrones video game is more about verbal sparring than it is about actual combat. Words can determine your fate. You could be ruined if you make the wrong comment to Littlefinger, killed if you make the wrong comment to Joffery, and doom yourself in court if you spurn a powerful lady like Cersei or Margery.

It will be interesting to see what Episode 6: “The Ice Dragon” has in store and whether or not it will make this video game a winning series for Telltale Games or a massive disappointment.

Don’t forget that “Winter is coming” fellow gamers, and don’t forget to share this Game of Thrones review on social media.
