Why is repetition forgivable in some games and not in others?

Just curious as to why one game would get docked 4 entire points ( 9.0 to 5.0 ) on its sequel for being too similar and not adding enough when another franchise actually has its score increase on the 2nd game when it does the exact same thing almost to the point where it could classify as an expansion pack.

If they're implemented well, I guess it doesn't matter.

It's also an extremely grey area, what do you define as repetition? In halo 3 you sure shoot a lot of bullets, is that too repetitive?

Because in some games the formula is just too awesome, and can be manipulated and used in several ways and still be kickass... While some games are just fun once, and that's it.

Some games can make up for it.

All games are repetative, especially when it comes to combat. Its whether or not the game is monotonous that makes the repetition not fun.

Donkey Konga comes to mind on his point. it was just an expansion pack, just more songa and modes. it got a lower score from reviewers.

I recall some years ago buying C&C Red Alert: Retaliation for PS1, I absolutley loved this game! I was suprised when seeing review scores between this and the normal Red Alert that it had lost multiple points. I'll admit they hadn't changed all that much in the game, added some special units and missions (more like an expansion but in the form of a brand new game). So i'm not saying they should be gaining points for thier creativity but should the game be loosing points? The game was just as good as its predecessor except with a bit more. The games came out so close togethor as well, it was almost liked a revised game (like the mk3 umk3 scenario).

I think i'm just biased for Retaliation as it was one of the greats I grew up with :P

Every game is repetitive in some form or another, but if its fun then a reviewer may be willing to overlook it.
