I've always considered myself a gameplay beats graphics person and will endure bad graphics if the gameplay is good, but I've noticed something about older games. I find the 8-bit, 16-bit era of graphics to have aged a lot better than games from the late 90's to mid 2000s, especially in regards to PC.  I love KOTOR II for instance, but the graphics really bug me for some reason, despite the fact that I can pop in Super Mario World and think it looks great.  Maybe this is more of a style issue, but I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

I think a lot of the early 3D games haven't aged anywhere near as well as older 2D games, which in many ways were more artistic, and had their own aesthetic charm.

I think the more cartoony and less realistic graphics try to be the better they age.

The ones that don't try too hard to be realistic and have good art direction. Most of these gray-and-brown, destroyed buldings and explosions shooters will look bland shortly. Games like Wind Waker/Okami/Viewtiful Joe/Rayman Origins? They have and will look appealing far beyond their release time.

Attention to detail and atmosphere do it for me. For example the first MGS I can still be amazed at how awesome it looks. But a game like KOTOR, from what I remember has a lot of emptier spaces that start to look dull when you are not impressed with the best looking parts of the game anymore.

I was going to say the same thing. I've been playing a lot of Okami HD lately and it may of well be a current generation game because the art style is so freaking perfect.Â
