What game though far from perfect or such, do you hold a special place for in your heart?

For me it is Flower on the PSN. Not the best game, or best graphics, very short, and no real point... but simply a unique special game.

Shadow of the Colossus gets an honorable mention as well.

Odin Sphere. Its a rather rare and enjoyable experience for me. Side-scrolling action with great story, art and combat. Its a pity it has lags issues.

Jade Empire. Definitely a gem IMO. I loved everything from the story/setting/atmosphere to the overall gameplay (even if the combat wasn't that deep). I really hope to see a sequel from Bioware sometime.

Good question... There's a few games that come to mind. Half-Life 2 means alot to me, it is my favourite game. Also GTA San Andreas brings back memories. But the Crash Bandicoot series is what got me into gaming. That ranks right up there.

Resident Evil 4 on the Cube blew me away. With graphics gameplay story the whole works, one of the best game I've ever played. (also FFVII) As for pure enjoyment and making me the gamer I am today, Halo1&2, Goldeneye, and COD4...

Super Mario 64. I'm not a fan of 3D Mario platformers (I dislike SMS and despise SMG), and can very much see the glaring issues present in the game (camera especially)... but I was fond of the game back when it came out and nostalgia holds a strong sway over me.

I feel the same way about almost all the games you guys have listed thus far. :) I've a few games that are very special to me as well but that happen to be very well known; games such as Zelda Ocarina of time, Super Mario 64, Half Life 2... to name a few anyway.

Crash Bandicoot is definitely not a game you hear about very often, and while I wouldn't say that it gives me the same fuzzy feelings that Ocarina of Time does, it's a fantastic game that I enjoyed very much back in the good ol' days. However, I want to add a game that most users on here may not remember very much: Top Gear Rally.

Top Gear Rally was the bomb back when it was released, partly because it was the best looking racing game ever at the time and partly because I wasn't spoiled with games as a kid and only had Top Gear Rally and a handful of other games to keep playing over and over. So naturally I spent a lot of time playing the game, whether I wanted to or not. Not that it was a bad game mind you, I wouldn't trade the many hours I spent playing this game for anything.

Despite the visual element this is honestly not the best racing game ever made, it has some glaring flaws such as the shallow computer AI and small track selection, however it more than made up for it's flaws with the things it did right: it's paint shop provided a level of game customization unheard of on console games at the time and the few courses that it did have were very well designed and the various routes available kept each lap fresh and interesting.

It also made self-made games possible. In particular, my brother and me would often just run around the tracks playing "tag", or applying a police-car paint job designed with the paint shop and playing a police chase game where the "police car" would give the other player a 20 second or so head-start and then attempt to chase the running car. The race would be over when the police car made physical contact with the other car. A simple game for sure but one that provided hours of fun.

Oh, and did I mention that the menu music is fantastic? Check it out, this track made working in the paint shop mode a most relaxing experience that I'll remember forever.

Not sure there is one specific game...

But There are a handful that has even gone so far as to shaping the person I am, Those games I love a whole lot, nomatter the age they have now, or how simple thier game mechanics are.

But to me:

The Legend of Zelda (NES)

Guardian Legend (NES)

River City Ransom (Nes)

SuperStreet fighter 2 (arcades)

Syndicate (PC)

X-com Ufo Defense (PC)

Duke Nukem 3d (pc)

Mortal Combat 2 (Arcade)

I couldnt pick any one of those, some may be hopeless, some may be broken, but man... those games I have this odd love for... Each time I hear one of the themes, or see some of the gameplay, I get all warm and happy... Kinda odd really...

InFAMOUS, and LBP.

Edit: I will explain more.

LBP got me into gaming, and I have more memories with it than a lot of things. InFAMOUS just because, I really dont know. It my 4th favorite game so why arent 1,2 and 3 up there. Dont ask me why but thats just how it is. Maybe because favorite games 1 2 and 3 I werent hyped for, but Infamous I was and it met it.

No, no that doesnt make sense. I guess I just dont know why.

Anyone who can name this game gets a cookie!

So many memories... I was actually terrible at this game as a child, it took me years to beat the first level, but I didn't care. It was awesome.

foxhound_fox

I can fully agree with that.

I couldn't get into SMG at all and SMS just felt clunky. I was worried that it was simply nostalgia that kept M64 alive for me all these year so I re-bought it on the VC earlier this year and used a gamecube controller. I was shocked to find out that M64 simply is the better game, sure nostalgia probaly has a part of it but I think the fact that is was a pure platformer that didn't trust it's gameplay on gimmicks like SMS (watergun) or SMG (motion-controls and new suits every level) is what makes it a much tighter and more enjoyable game.

SMG looked fantastic but Mario's movements didn't fit the level-design, he is too slow and clunky in his own game. That is at least my opinion.

[...] SMG looked fantastic but Mario's movements didn't fit the level-design, he is too slow and clunky in his own game. That is at least my opinion.

JLF1

That much is even true about SM64 as well. His movements are very floaty and the "sliding" his feet do everywhere (in all three games) doesn't allow for finesse, but can many times screw the player over. I think my main issue with modern Mario platformers (SM64 for 3D and NSMB for 2D) is that they really haven't pushed the limits of the genre. Granted, I'd get eaten alive in System Wars by the die-hard SMG fans for saying this... but SMG really hasn't added anything noteworthy to the platformer genre. Sure, gravity and motion controls are neat, but they don't really change much about platformers. Gravity exists in other games too, and has been a staple of platformers since they were originally created (when you jump, your character eventually comes back down).

Granted, SMG is a great game, I just don't think it deserves all the praise it gets (especially from the die-hard fans who think Nintendo can do no wrong; i.e. SMG2 will undoubtedly be well-received whether it changes nothing, or changes everything).

Maybe not a very original answer, but Super Mario Bros. It was a constant thing in my life as a kid, me and my two brothers sank a lot of time into it, and at that point in the eighties, we were dirt poor. (though Mom did a terrific job making sure we never knew it) We essentially only had that game (and Duck Hunt on the same cart) for a very long time after getting a NES. (and we kept having to return them to get a working one) Other honorable mentions would be CastleVania 2: Simon's Quest, (my first Castlevania) Zelda 2, (my first Zelda) and Shenmue. (I just love the city of Yokosuka as represented in that game, I fed that damn cat every day, and the Tomato convenience store theme is the best thing to ever happen to mankind)

It's hard to choose just one...

Doom 1&2

KOTOR

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter

Quake 1,2,&3

Batman: AA

Mass Effect 1&2

Okay, now I'm just naming my favorite games. I'll stop.

The Castlevania series on the NES. Castlevania III was the best and would be in my list of the 10 greatest games of all time. Somewhere in the 6-10 bracket.
