Maybe Metal Gear Solid 3. But I also enjoyed Hitman: Blood Money because of the disguises and different ways to complete the missions.

Hard choice between Thief 2 (a very immersive experience) and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (very enjoyable, also nice audiovisual experience)...

Mine has to be Splinter cell chaos theory. Wow how I loved that game.

Double agent was also v.good, but chaos theory had a special charm to it.

By the way, I haven't played Metal Gear or thief, so I don't know if I would have liked them better.

Metal Gear Solid TTS (I've only played that and MGS2 though). Splinter Cell is a close second.

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. For me, that was pretty much the most well rounded stealth game I've ever played. Terrific graphics + solid gameplay + Michael Ironside = WIN.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Hitman series, these games really did require a player to be stealthy to effectively complete a mission.

So Hitman series is my choice.

Snake Eater. The original Tenchu is likely my most played yet, though. I'm sure Snake Eater will pass it eventually, but I played an absolute tonne of Tenchu back when it was new. Grand Master on nearly every possible lay-out for both characters. Ridiculous time trials for the training level, too. To the point where I don't think I could of shaved any more time off no matter any variable of luck. I just genuinely loved the game.

Thief: Deadly Shadows (notice how I don't put : right next to D, which isn't how you should write the title anyway) for me too (PC version). I love the Thief series, and I liked how Deadly Shadows had the free roaming thing going on in "The City". The only thing that was missing was Prince of Persia style platforming. Assassin's Creed anyone?:D

My favourite has to be the original Metal Gear Solid, though by the sounds of it I should try out MGS3.

Thief 2: The Metal Age.

Huge missions, amazing level design, freeform gameplay, a great plot and a fun protagonist. What's not to love?

The correct answer is actually Thief 2. This is one of the most amazing games, ever, period. The TC, WTF man? I mean, yes, Thief Deadly Shadows was good, but you didn't know it was released on PC? Have you actually heard of Thief 1 & 2? They're better, smarter, and grander.

I liked Tench Stealth Assassins for the PSX. Clever diversion tactics made it fun. Plus, you played a ninja. But I never did play the Metal Gear games with any great intensity.

I said "I think it came out on PC" not "I dont know" read what I say correctly there is a difference between "I think" and "I dont know" as for Thief and Thief 2 yes I have heard of them I just haventh played them since I never see those games on store shelves.

Sorry if it came off harsh, I didn't mean it like that. And if want to check out the originals, you can ship from the UK (unless you live there of course) from this place:

http://www.mastertronic.com/productSoldOut.asp?pid=279&productLabelID=1

Now that's a steal if I ever saw one.

I know Metal Gear fans will practically shoot me for saying it, but my favorite stealth game is Metal Gera Solid: The Twin Snakes. I know a lot of fans felt it butchered the original, but I never played the original! MGS:TS still had the most memorable story and lasting impression on me. MGS3 would be my second favorite, probably followed by Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow.
