My favorite is Vice City. That game definitely has the coolest and funnest atmosphere, with an awesome soundtrack.

I have been playing Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360. The city is very well done and believable. It really feels like you're in a big city. You can go bowling, play pool, go to bars, restaurants, strip clubs, etc. It is an open world and you do whatever you want. There is no time limit. The biggest downside I can think of is, the character you play as (Niko Bellic) is very boring. I don't like the storyline that much neither. But the big, believable city makes up for these downsides.

Vice City is still my favorite. I would like to see Vice City remade in 4K, with all the 80's vibe and atmosphere.

What is your favorite Grand Theft Auto game?

Definitely Vice City by far. I have not enjoyed any other GTA game since Vice City.

Just out of the curiosity for everyone here that said Vice and San Andreas is it more due to nostalgia? have you played these games recently? do you actually prefer the gameplay of these games over 4 and 5?

It's not just nostalgia. I've played Vice City more recently than any of the others and it's really the only one in the series that I still enjoy playing. I do prefer the gameplay in Vice City over the gameplay in 4 and 5 because the gameplay in 4 and 5 shifted to a more realistic direction and as a result lost some of the more arcadey over-the-top fun that makes Vice City so enjoyable. In addition to that, Vice City also has the best story, the best main character, the best setting, and by far the best soundtrack.

I love Vice City setting and soundtrack same for San Andreas but for me I have a hard time going back because I find the shooting and lack of physics unsatisfying. GTAV is probably my favorite. GTA IV is a close second though GTAV has the variety that IV was lacking.

I just enjoyed the plot and thought the characters were interesting & well written/voice acted.

And I loved having the varied environments in the game with a mix of big cities, small country towns & farmland/desert etc.

I haven't played any games before IV for ages. I had them on PS2 and packed it away soon after I got PS3. I remember my favorite was San Andreas. I just loved the big and varied map with cities, mountains and farmland. We got that again with V plus the improved graphics. So my favorite is GTAV. I haven't played online, but the single-player part is great with fun and varied characters. Trevor is just amazingly fun to play.

Definitely San Andreas. The level of customization it allowed the player was a breath of fresh air. It blew my mind when I saw how you could make yourself fat by eating a lot or buff by working out and it had a lot of different clothes you could wear pretty early on. Next comes Vice City, though, for the music and atmosphere

I just enjoyed the plot and thought the characters were interesting & well written/voice acted.

i was hoping you'd be more specific because to me they were the weakest aspects of the game. cj was probably the dullest and blandest protagonist of any gta game, catalina was one of the most excruciating characters in video game history, sweet was ok, eazy-e and nate dogg ryder and big smoke were pretty good early on but underused overall, the rest were just a random collection of oddballs and misfits.

and the story... jeez, what a waste. it started brilliantly. the in-the-hood sequence of missions captured the early 90s gangsta rap atmosphere to a tee. it builds up to a thrilling crescendo... and then wanders off on a bizarre tangent, never to recover. it was the most flagrant attempt to increase longevity by stretching a story to wafer thin levels and cramming the game full of largely pointless side activities i'd seen, and held the gaming jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none crown until ubisoft decided to stop making good games and start making open world games instead.

rockstar must've seen the error of their ways and wound the style right back for gta iv, focusing on serious tone and story but going too far the other way losing some of the fun in the process, before finally arriving at the right balance between story, characters and over the top gameplay in ballad of gay tony

GTA 3, call it nostalgia but this was a groundbreaking game for the gaming industry. I have yet to fall in love with the series as much as that game which made me addicted to videogames. Easily in my top 10 games of all time. Second, San Andreas.

@Macutchi: Yeah I agree with some of your points, but I still think SA is the most interesting. Of course the story isn't the best story ever in videogames, but it's still better than the other GTA games.

But probably the thing I liked most about SA was the world. I preferred it a lot more than 4 & 5 (even though they were more detailed).

I found the environment to be the best of any GTA game, and I haven't really played one since.

the world was great. i think i was just expecting a focused story like in vice city, where it stuck to the theme throughout.

san andreas started amazingly but the minute sweet goes to jail, the whole gangsta / boyz in da hood vibe goes out the window, the early plot floated away like a puff of truth's smoke and that's when my interest started to plummet and frustration began to grow. up to that green sabre mission i thought it was going to surpass vice city it was that good. i think i hold a bit of resentment against the game for not reaching the potential i thought it had

This is very hard...

GTA III driving with Scarface music from Flashback 95.6 was the most awesome thing.

Vice City was amazingly cool for the time...

But I have to say San Andreas combined the best of the previous games and introduced gang wars....

Theme song is probably the best intro ever made + "Killing in the Name" (Rage Against the Machine)

Classic.

Probably will be the latest GTA they will release, even if GTA 3 still resembles in me, but it was just sweet memories of the past, in which there wasn't that many sandbox games.

I agree with Vice City. To me, that was the peak of what I wanted from GTA. GTA III also holds a special place in my heart, although it hasn't aged super well.

San Andreas for sure. Lots of content, lots of things to do, lots of customisation. Vice City is a close second but map size pushes San Andreas just a wee bit ahead.

Still Chinatown Wars.

All GTAs become too much for me, they're simply too content filled. CW focused on what needed to be done, the 2D play kept things simple and its mechanics easy, and the drug dealing mini-game was incredibly addictive.
